How hard is it to rebuild a t5??
how long do you think it would take??

I think i may try to rebuild mine

I went to school back in the day for auto mech. I say have someone else do it. One wrong thing and you are going to be buying a all new t-5 and maybe driveshaft. Why don't you up grade to tko 500, put the money in to up grade not rebuilds. again my 2 cents

I am getting ready to start my rebuild. Goto www.fordmuscle.com and pay the $15 for the year and look in the articles for the t5 rebuild. it shows you picture by picture how to rebuild the t5. I am starting this weekend.

I don't know how you feel about the DYI thing when it comes to gears, some people don't like the idea of working on transmissions. If the DYI transmission fix idea isn't something that you would rather leave to someone else, here are some resources:

A T5 rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and other small parts costs about $160. It does not include any gears or shafts.

http://cartapes.com also has a video on how to rebuild your T5 or Tremec. It costs less than $20, and is worth every penny of it.

I did a Tremec 3550 rebuild, and it wasn't that difficult. The video was an immense help, and I would recommend viewing it. At $20, it will give you an opportunity to look and decide for yourself if you think that it is something you want to try to do.

foxfan, it is a great learning experience and believe it or not i can drive stick better becaus enow i know exactly what is going on when i shift gears (instead of just a general understanding of the concept)

do download that service manual if nobody i helping you, i myself had my father watching over and helping with some of the c-clips (they are bitches, big ones)

took me an hour to get the tranny down (i had done it a few times the week before), the next day we had it torn down and completely reassembled in 5 hours, siliconed that **** up, the next day it was back in in 2 hours and drivin like it should be... of course 6 months later im here with abroken countershaft..... oh well

The video that Jrichker posted is alot of help I recommend that. Just take your time and organize everything.

i would suggest putting your money towards a new tranny but i have rebuilt my t5 and it really wasen't that hard. it took me 2 days because i have never opened up a transmission before that but now i know that it would only take a couple of hours. once again though for not a whole lot more you can upgrade.

I just buttoned up my tranny yesterday and I have to say it was more intimidating than hard. You will need a press which I picked up from harbor freight for about 120 but it was a great experience. I highly suggest the video and dont forget to put your remote in a zip lock bag.

Hey FoxFan u remind me of my best friend he is always like lets just fix this our selves and then we will know how and now the guy is now a GM tech. He was never affraid to try and fix anything and never affraid of work. Some guys I know are so lazy they say they have been thinking about changins thier tires but just havn't done it yet. I think you should try and rebuild your T-5 and if u end up ****ing it up u can just find another one. good luck on what ever you choose.

Hey man , do you have a part number or pic of the press you bought . I just got the Video Jrichker mentioned and will be attempting a rebuild myself . I want to make sure I get a good press , Thanks .

I didnt use a press. A press would be the way to go though. You will need a dial indicator with magnetic base.

Dont buy the snap ring pliers with the changeable pin heads. Turst me they suck.

there is no need in buying a tko 500 or 600 when you can pay 1000 bucks and make your t-5 hold 650 hp and 550 fptq? does it make sense to spend 1600 for the tranny, u have to buy the yoke, and the bell housing, shifter and a clutch, by the time you buy all that u will have 2300 bucks, jsut doesnt sound like its worth it to me

95conv5.0, how can u make a t5 hold that much power for 1000 bucks? the gforce kit with everything to make it withhold that much power, along with the different clutch puts you at far over 2000 bucks, so don't say that's the route

i was goin to do a rebuild on my tremec 3550 but when i pulled the covers off i said "fawk that ****" and put em back on. So much u have to take apart. i would have someone else do it so it would have somekind of warranty on it.

I picked up the second one down at the store in Fremon, CA and you will need a large bearing puller too. Snap ring pliers(fixed tips), lock ring pliers, and locktite 640 sleeve retainer(not to be confused with permatex green!) are the only other things I had to buy.

I think its the input shaft where you cut the bearing cage off the race and use the front lip that retains the bearing to put the puller on because you can't possibly get enough meat from the back to pull it. Other than that it was pretty strait forward.
