As it says I am looking to rebuild my tranny. It is leaking fluid that I thought was the rear seal but it seems like it is the front one so I thought I would take it out and rebuild it. Anyone had experience with this? Be my first time actually rebuilding one but we all got to start somewhere. I have rebuilt several engines and worked on 5.0s for a very long time (not an expert LOL) but have only cracked them open to inspect gears/syncros and such. I also need to get info on the parts and instructions.(where to get them)
thanks

It's pretty easy you can get a video from Brothers or Eastwood that explains how to rebuild a T5.

Since you rebuilt an engine it shouldn't be much of a promblem. Get the video it explains everything really good.

It's pretty easy.

Download and print out the manual and just follow it. A lot of the trans parts only fit together one way. It's straight forward. I can basically describe the steps off the top of my head after rebuilding 1 t-5.

sweet, thanks for the info guys. I just dont wanna end up on the side of the road after all the fluid drained out and a burnt out tranny. thanks again guys

where and how much fluid are you losing?

dont know just yet, doesnt seem like a whole lot but i am more worried about where it is coming from and taking the tranny out if it is the front. I am going to take the tail shaft off and replace the rear seal and the bushing inside as well as the yoke to start off with. THen I will move onto the front if need be

The tailshaft housing will not come off without disassembling the shifter mechanism. The rear seal can be pried out once the driveshaft & yoke are removed. The replacment seal has a lip on it that protudes and will require a little imagination to come up with a way to drive it into place. I used some old front wheel bearings & a 2x4.

As previously mentioned, here's the link to more info...

See http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English/onlineorder/product.asp to download a FREE service manual for T5 or Tremec 3550
You will need the Adobe Acrobat viewer which is also a free download – http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

See http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/ or http://www.ddperformance.com/index2.htm for parts

A T5 rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and other small parts costs about $160. It does not include any gears or shafts.

Hanlon also has a video on how to rebuild your T5 or Tremec. If they are out of stock see http://cartapes.com. It costs less than $20, and is worth every penny of it.

The tranny is sealed together with silicone. There really aren;t any seals except for the end yoke seal where the driveshaft inserts.

The t-5 usually leaks from this rear yoke seal, or most commonly from the speedo gear hole. It rarely leaks from other spots unless the person whop rebuilds the tranny really skimps on the RTV when putting it all together. Up front, the only spot it would leak is from the bearing retainer, and it would only leak if it was put in without RTV. If you have a front leak, i'd be thinking rear main seal before tranny leak. If the fluid brown or red?

T-5 leaks can cause problems. When they get low on fluid, the tight parts of the tranny don't get lubricated enough and may heat up and fail. The first thing to score is usually the snout of the mainhshaft inside the pocket bearing in the input shaft. It will score up and cause the tranny to whine like a mofo in every gear but 4th.

Whining T-5's are a common problem that could be easily cured with maintainence. Mainshaft replacement can be a little work. It pretty much requires the entire t-5 to be taken apart and the mainshaft itself can run $250 brand new. When i did my T-5, i lucked out and got a good used one for $60.
