I've been working on my 9" rear end. Stripped the housing, primed it, repainted it.

I order new Currie 31 spline axles.

I bought a rebuilt 3rd member a while ago, 31 spline traction lock with 3.50 gears. I've been storing it until the car was ready to roll.

I everything is all ready I order all new ARP bolts, etc.

So I figured let me take 20 minutes to get everything fitted.

I drop the 3rd member in after installing the new studs, I put in the pass. side axle and it slides in perfectly. I go to put the drivers side and and it goes about 1" into the 3rd member and stops? So i pull it back apart twice checking it out thinking somethin gis wrong with the axles.

Finally I try assembling without the housing. Pass side goes in deep. Drivers side would go in. I looking inside the spline housing and it looks right, but I notice the splines are ever so off. There is a inner and outer section of spline, one for the spool and one for the inner gear. So I had to take the whole thing apart and figure out how to along them.

Never done it before so I just dove right in. I go the whole thing apart. checked out the clutch assembly - all looks new. It's very much like the clutch on motocross bikes. Lined up the gears. Put the axle in place as I tighted everything to keep it aligned. I torqued all the bolts and set the backlash to what it felt like before. After 3 hours I finally have it all back together.

Everything fit! Holy crap, that sucked!
