I know the concept of what your red line is, how you shouldn't go past it or you could damage your engine. I was just wondering more about it. What parts 'set' redline, how do you raise it and when you do how do you know where the new one is. More or less i was just curious so i decided to ask.

Going to a dyno and looking at your curves is the only true way to find where you need to redline/shift at. All parts have to work together to set your engines "redline". IE: The stock rods are not gonna spin 8000 rpms. So you upgrade your rods/crank... but your upper end is going to limit you now by not flowing enough gas/air. So you upgrade your intake/heads/bigger injectors/carb. IMO, springs are the most important thing to upgrade if your going to spin it fast. If you dont the valves will float. Now you can spin your motor to 7500 if you want.. but its going to be pointless with the stock cam because most here say it peaks out of power ~ 4800. So just upgrading one or two things may let you rev it higher, but its not going to make any power up there.

on a stockish application, as said, the stock limiter is past the HP and torque peaks and running a bit closer to valve floating, etc.
hydraulic lifters generally dont like a ton of revs (Rhoads lifters etc, are a different story).
there is just no point to having a higher redline (i assume we are talking stock stuff, or else this will be a long thread).

per many of our stock tachs, we spin to 7K rpm too.

it all depends on the weight and geometry of components used. i would not spin a SBC to those revs - and if i had to, i would rework the cam, etc to bring the curves down in the band.
