hey all... i got a quick question. i have a beefed up rearend with a tractech detroit truetrac differential and 31 spline mosers. i am gonna change my fluid (been a while) and happen to have a few bottles of redline 75w 140 syn gear lube from another car back in the day sitting around. would it be fine to run???? any opinions and info would be greatly appreciated

In my opinion 75W140 is too thick and pretty much pointless to run. The heavy weight oil is not needed and could rob you a bit of RWHP. Stick with 75W90 or 80W90.

go to redline's site. as i recall, the 140 flows BETTER than 90 weight dino gear oil. if so, i dont see why you could not use it (it is something ive been meaning to do too - i see ambient temps of 110*).

thanks hissin.. thats what i was thinking. i dont think it will have any adverse affects. from what i remember about this oil is that it is SUPER slippery. besides, if i were to lose any power it would be totally marginal, correct??

I guess in a way I was wrong. Thanks for clearing that up HISSIN! The loss in power would be so marginal if any so I woudn't worry about it. Throw the Stuff In!

as i recall, the Redline 140 flows better and should be very close, effeciency wise (if not better - i just cant recall the numbers - just my impression from some time ago). since the 140 should flow better than dino 80W-90 when cold, i dont see how it would be much less efficient. the synthetic properties just keep it from 'thinning out' like a conventional oil would - i bet to the feel, it is as viscous as 80-90 at room temp.

on an aside, i would make sure it is LSD gear oil you have. i think they sell 80W-140 GL5 for trannies as well, which would probably not have additive packs.

alrighty then . i'll put it in tommroow and see what happens. i live in phoenix where it is hotter than hell , so the thicker stuff might do me some good. i'll let u guys know if i notice any difference.... like my locker engagment getting a bit smoother or anything. . thanks again u two... i just wanted to play it safe and not destroy my $530 locker ( tractech diffs kick ass!!!!! )


oh and hissin... its the oil that is meant for limited slip type diffs, so it already has the friction mod mixed in. i wouldnt even bother if it was the other type. thanks again for the attention to detail

i do think that the 140 is marketed for truck differentials or noisy rear ends. i dont see why it would not work.

if you have doubts, i would read up on redline's site and/or send them an email asking about it. there are enough products out there from Redline, it can get confusing.

Shon, i figured you simply missed the fact that he had some synthetic on hand (perhaps thinking he meant dino gear oil). im not sure i would run a conventional 140 back there.

Boss, i did not realize you were in Phx. after confirming that the requirements are met with the 140 (i cant think of why they would not be, but i normally ask the manufacturer anyhow), i bet you will be fine. it gets darn hot up there.

well guys, i went ahead and did it early this morning.... TA COVERS MAKE IT SOOOOO EASY . anyways everything went more than smooth as it took me under 10 minutes to change. took her for a ride and everything seems find and dandy... in fact, when i go around corners i get the impression that the locker action isnt as prounced as it was before with regular dino oil. . all in all i am satisfied and i dont see why you wouldnt benifit from it as well hissin if you are seeing alot of toasty temps were you live. truth be told when i chamge it again in about 10,000 miles i'll know exactly how this stuff holds up. so hissin, i suggest you give it a whirl... are you usin and aftermarket diff???

sounds like the nice pumpkin cover makes swapping fluid easy.

im down in Tucson and see about the same temps you do. currently i am running a mix of 75-90 and 85-140 synthetic blend. i think there is one shop in town that has the RL 140. ill have to swap it one of these days.

let us know how it looks when you swap it out (even just a PM). im always curious to know that kind of stuff.

i put redline 75/140 in my rear end at 51k a couple weeks after i had gears put in and i just changed it last weekend. the car now has 105k on it and it looked pretty clean, not much darker than the fresh 75/140 i put back in it

well thats awesome that it looked so damn good after all those miles. ... hear that hissin? i think i found a winner here and i will probably keep running this stuff for a while. hissin... i'll deffinately send you a PM or something after i get some miles on this stuff for a long term review
