Redline damage?

I have a stock 2004 Mustang GT, 5 speed.

On my way to work this morning, I was racing (owning) an RX8. However, I really wasn't paying attention to the tac and when I shifted out of 2nd, I noticed I was near 6500 - 6800 RPM. I am concerned that this may have caused some damage, although the stang is driving/performing normally. I drove it another 5 miles or so, and did not notice any change in performance or sound. I know running an engine at high RPMs can cause damage. Am I just lucky or is it possible there is damage that I have not noticed?

Any advice or comments are appreciated.

don't GT's have the rev limiter set at like 62? either way don't worry about it, your car will be fine, that stuff happens while racing, these cars weren't built for grocery getting

I advise you not to worry about it. Yeah it's not a good idea to shift it that high. I'm acutally surprised that you were able to rev it that high in the first place, but unless you heard a clack, bang, or boom. I wouldn't worry.....just don't make it a habit.

And you would have been proud as I pulled away from that RX8 as if it was standing still. (loud chirp into 2nd, and a Vroooom.... as I hit 3rd) heh...

You're fine. Rev limiters prevent any big, sudden damage by high rpms. Damage can occur though if you drive around at those rpms in 2nd gear all afternoon w/o shifting (like some of our ricer friends like to do). Don't do that.

Actually the rev limiter cannot handle a big sudden change like downshifting and causing the engine to suddenly hit 7000 rpms.

Oh, that's right...sorry! Isn't it something to do with the rev limiter computer reading and controlling only throttle-induced rpms, and can't read a purely "mechanically induced" rpm burst that comes from a downshift?

Do u have a chip or tuner? Because I had the superchips tuner on my GT and I could rev that thing past 6500 rpms I hit 6800 on a test one day (never again), I inquired and they said the tuner did not remove the factory limiter. I was confused, cause my friend also had the same tuner and his rev limiter would kick in. Anyway, my car was fine, no problems, I wouldn't suggest doing it routinely though.

But now with the DOHC it's a whole different story.

Well I wasn't down-shifting. I was in 2nd gear. When I went to drop her into 3rd is when I saw the tac drop from 6500 - 6800 range to 4000 in 3rd gear. It all happened so fast, so it's hard to be 100% accurate. There was a car in front of me, and I had to shoot over to the right to pass him while passing the RX8 in the same lane. hehe...

Redline damage?
