Romeo or Windsor or both?

Ok, I have an 02 GT, my vin number has an X in it, running a vin decoder shows I have a windsor block, is that right? Everywhere i look in this forum says 99-01 have windsor blocks and 02 and newer have romeos. Any help on this? Also I have 11 valve cover bolts, so therefore I have romeo heads, correct? Is it possible to have romeo heads on a windsor block from the factory? This has me a little confused trying to shed some light on it. If i pulled the casting numbers where could I go to check them?

I got both, it was an option in my year. See Romeo and Windsor are brothers that make the engines that go in the Mustangs. And if you special order it you can have them BOTH to build your engine. Thats what happened with mine. I even got both of them to sign my engine.

Again, only 1999 and 2000 Mustangs are Windsor engines. The 01 and later cars are REP motors. You have an REP motor.

Romeo and Windsor are two different plans that make the 4.6L motor. There were some instances where 99-01 mustangs received the Romeo motor and others received the Windsor. The easiest way to tell is to count the number of bolts in your valve covers. The Romeo has 11 bolts. The Windsor is a little different. The oil fill side has 14 holes (13 bolts) and the non-oil fill side has 13.

I understand what you guys are saying, but then why does my VIN suggest I have a windsor. X=windsor and W=romeo, right? Does it really matter anyway?

What's REP motor? Sometimes I hate the world we live in...every GD thing has an acronym that tells you absolutely nothing unless you know the jargon.

As for the difference between Windsor and Romeo engines, Windsor is where they build the truck engines. I think they tapped the Windsor plant to meet production demand for the passenger car engine lines. Hence both plants producing car engines.

Supposedly (according to my FRPP catalog) the Windsor engine's have 8 bolt cranks like the Cobra's, but not forged. Basically....they have truck cranks.

There is a W stamped above the oil pan on the driverside of Windsor blocks, usually the head has a sticker on it that also says Windsor. After being on this board for 3 year, I have never seen a windsor motor in a 2001 Mustang GT. So I doubt you have one. Even cars built in 2000, like mine, have Romeo blocks.

You thinking about some cams bro? Let me know if you are, we can split the cost of the AFM cam tool and swap out both our cams. Maybe we can get Rusty to go thirds and have a BBQ and swap all our cams!!

Better add 2 or three BBQ's! Cams is a 6-8 hour job, unless you've done it a few times or the motor is out of the car.

With the AFM cam tool you only need to remove the valve covers and front covers, remove the cam guides and ubolt them and slide them out(little things in between). The chains and cam sprockets don't move or have to be fussed with so no timing has to be done. There are people on here have used this tool and said it took them about 2 hours. So either they are full of it ( I doubt that) or this tool isn't as well known as I thought it was. I could be totaly wrong about that statement but from the research I have done, the time to do the swap is about 2 hours.

There are alot of folks on modulardepot, who have cams, you'll get a real answer there if that tool works like some say. There is no doubt that cam chane and headswap for that matter can be done with motor in car, but easier if out.

tony, sounds good to me, i have a compressor and the air tools to make life easier, we'd have to see if rusty wants to also. I will be getting cams sometime this summer, and getting florida registered, so no emissions worry's for me

Sounds like a good time frame for me man, I'll shoot Rusty and e-mail and see what he thinks. I knew you were gonna do the Florida Reg., lucky bastid!! Good for you man, you can get some aggressive cams now!! You should go out to Hawaii Racing one day and check all the stuff out, they carry Crane Cams.
