When I'm ready to cut out the old tail panel and weld in the new one....what do I need to worry about? I"m thinking about the gas tank. Do i need to remove it before i do anything? thats the main thing i'm worried about...anything else?

If your doing any kind of welding or cutting around a gas tank I would remove it.

Agreed, pull it and plug the line.
It will also give you a place to sit to reweld the inside.

Just make sure that nobody closes the trunk lid on you.

If you can prevent just cutting it out by drilling out the spot welds, go that route. That tail panel can be really, really tricky. Just be careful, and please do remove the fuel tank.
