So I was washing my car the other day, and the bucket I was using some how scrapped up against the side of my rear bumper. After I was all done I noticed a rather large series of scratches where the bucket rubbed against the car. When I bent down to look at the scratch, it looks like it might have scratched the clear coat. Will rubbing compound fix this? It sticks out like a sore thumb when the car is clean and all you see is this giant series of black scratches

What color is the car?
There are several product on the market designed to take out surface scratches. One of them is called Scratch Out by Kit. Meguiars also makes one as well. Just be sure not to rub too hard with this stuff.

There is about a dozen differnet products I can recommend for you to try. What Marineone has suggested is probably the best route to try first. Use a soft foam application pad, a good scratch remover like Meguiars, 3m, or Mothers, and buff the excess off with a soft microfiber towel for best results. Most scratches that are just in the clear coat come out easy this way. If you can't get it out with this stuff, you can always use some abbrasives with an orbital or rotary buffer but I'de try the basic scratch removers before I'de go that route.

sometimes regular car wax will get rid of light scratches, its worth a shot.

was the bucket metal or plastic? if its metal it may be oretty bad, but if its plastic it is more than likely a scuff easily removed with a mild hand polish. meguirs makes fantastic chemicals for use by hand. #7 is very good and wont hurt by hand.

also useful is Ardex Stereo Glaze numbr 3 and 3M Rubbing Compund-Imperial Hand Glaze.

Auto Zone carries a nice product named Liquid Glass that I have had good luck with. If it doesn't work, I would try things in stages...Kit Scratch Out or the Mequiars product. Last stage, Turtle Wax Polishing Compound and Scratch remover...but ever so lightly in stages. Then wax thoroughly afterward no matter what you do. I have had similar problems and found that the only sure way to solve it is experimentation...gentle experimentation. Good Luck!
