Seized Motor?

Hi everyone!

I'm new here and let me start by saying i USED TO love my mustang.
A while back i was talked into "hooking up" my '99 v6 a little, by that i
mean putting a new cam in the motor. After this "friend" botched the job
and left me with a half put together motor i brought it to a certified mechanic
that I've known for a while. Anyway, after the motor was put back together
he said it started but wouldn't run, he tore down the engine and tried again. After all of that he showed me the crankshaft was locked up and he wasn't going to mess with it anymore. So about 1500$ in I'm left with my car sitting in front of my house. My question is if i replace the cam with a stock one, will the car run? I've gotten my yes's and no's, people say replace the motor others say just a stock cam. When i replaced the cam the car ran great and the only other aftermarket part put in was new pushrods. Now looking at the part, compcams.com says i needed to replace the springs and comp, would that cause the motor to seize? I'm on a tight budget atm, help is really appreciated! 44-704-9 - Xtreme Energy

Can you rotate the engine? Does it crank but just won't start? If it just won't start, I would say the cam is simply installed wrong. Putting the stock cam back in won't help if it isn't installed correctly either. I'm guessing the cam timing is off, and correcting that will fix the problem.

If the cam timing is way off, I don't know if you might have had valve/piston contact while trying to start the engine. I don't know if this is an interference engine- I don't think it is. If it is and you have bent valves, then you are looking at new heads to get it going again. Get them from a donor in the junkyard.

Or, you could not worry about what's up with this motor and drop in a complete junkyard replacement. It might actually be easier in the long run.

Good luck!

Hey, thanks for the reply.

The mech said it started, but he showed me the crank wouldn't turn. I guess in the long run I'm going to just drop another motor in, i was hoping since i have to tear the motor down to get that cam out anyway, that I'd maybe be able to salvage. Well, I guess learn from your mistakes right?

hi sb ,

well as the motor is locked up and your prob thinking the best bet is to just change out the engine for a junk yard one , why not get your self some tools and a work shop book and have ago at it your self ... its the best way of learning and after all what have u got to lose ?.. you have to take the engine out anyways to change it .. also why would the crank be locked up if u had oil init. then it can really only be a bad install of the cam , or as others have said bent valves ... tobe honest it dosent sound like your engine guy who did the work did it right to me .... on another note by doin the work your self you will get the job done right and advoid any rip off prices from other people . there always people willing to help with advice and tips if u need help on the net just need to ask :)

just some food for thought hope you get it sorted
richard.

hey richard,

Yea I'm always eager to learn new things, have read millions of hours on all types of swaps. A engine swap by myself sounds a little rough though. Who knows? I did just find a engine for 500$... Pretty much it's just unbolt the exhaust manifold and engine mounts and go? All the accessories are already disconnected... (Water pump, alternator, so on..)

yeah sb more or less make the job more easy if u label with some tags where wat pluged into what , you find that a big help when u reinstall the motor i think the hardest part is unbolting the transmiasson .... you may want to get a blowlamp with some map gas to free off any rusted nuts and bolts like exhaust down pipe bolts and stuff , but you get into it and im sure if u offerd some friends some beer you get all the help u would need :) i think you be ok as i say if u need help always the internet to look at and ask ..
i had a car once and had a gearbox prob it was a old austin 1300gt english car and i asked my friend to help so he said ok u get started on it , so i took the engine out .. then he said ok now take the gearbox off the engine and come back so i did ... then he said ok u got there far do it your self lol im like wtf lol so i learnt the hard way ... but it did teech me how to do things , just a matter of confidence to have ago :) btw i still think u should check out your own motor a bit better then before buying another motor . but what ever u do best of luck with it ...
have fun richard.
