Has anybody here had to shim their starter? My car makes a wierd noise when i start it and it sounds really nasty. Someone said i have to shim my starter because its hitting the flywheel.

Did it do it before? I would think if you shimmed it it wouldend catch the flywheel all the way. You might pull it off and see what the teeth on it look like.

The bendix might not be doing too hot or hitting the same extension point in the ring gear as it used to. But that is a starter issue which should be addressed, not bandaided, IMHO.

Shims are most often used on aftermarket mini starters to achieve proper bendix-ring gear mesh.

Good luck.

Did you solve this problem? My starter is making a weird noise when I start it up. Today I turned the key, it made the noise, I turned the key back and tried again, no noise started fine. Then next time, it made the noise twice then started fine on the third try. And the last time it made it three times and started fine on the fourth. I guess it seems to be getting progressively worse so I want to fix it tonight.

When is a mini starter needed? How high of compression can it handle?

Yeah I probably should have taken a quick look before searching for an answer online....

If the picture's not clear, the upper bolt is missing and the starter is about an inch away from the bellhouse. Glad it was that easy.

It was a horrible grinding buzz. Obviously the starter gear was missing the teeth of the flywheel. Surprised the car even started!
