I had the stock passenger seat from my old '95 taking up space in the shop, and decided to make a desk chair out of it. I have been searching for a nice, sturdy base for it for a year and finally hit the jackpot! I work at West Elm, an expensive contemporary furniture store, and they were throwing away a $300 leather desk chair because there was a tear in the leather, but the chrome base was mint so my manager let me have it. I welded a bracket together to mate the seat and the base, then I bolted it all together. Here is the finished product. Enjoy!

NICE! Gotta get arm rests now, although it will be better for playing guitar without them....

Funny you say that because when I got the new seats for the car, I saved this seat, and junked the other one because of its terrible condition, but I cut the entire back off the seat because the leather was in great condition, and I planned on using that for armrests. But you do make a great point, it is way better to play guitar without them....hmmmmm.

Very nice man.

My boss did something similar with his office chair, but used a captain chair from an Econoline Conversion van.

Sorry to say that the seat backs and sides are vinyl, not leather.

outstand job. be careful leaning back in it the first time though. It looks like the center support needs to be moved back about 4 inches so it's more under you butt and not your legs.
I'm not trying to pick it apart, just make it more usable and enjoyable. Unless your going to use it to watch your friends fall over backwards when they lean back. and that's OK too.
Again great idea.

Yea, someone in the 4.6 section said the same thing. I think the picture is kind of an illusion, because I mounted the post of the base directly under my ass for support. I can recline the chair all the way back, almost flat, and not fall over backwards. Thank you for the input though, that was one of the things that took the most thinking. Remember, measure twice, cut once...thanks to dad for that life lesson!

Right on the money. You should know best being in Industrial Design yourself. 15 hours straight in a $20 Walmart desk chair doing Illustrator drawings just sucks so terribly. Now I can do it in comfort, AND style!
