sounds like a harley??

i started my car today and heard a loud pop, then the car sounded like a harley. a very loud popping sound coming from the passenger side valve cover, right next to the throttle body. anyone experience this??

Did you blow a spark plug through the head? Pull the plug wires or COP, depending on the year of the engine and see if there is a plug loose.

One pop? Repeated pops? The one pop could signal your spark plug possibly popping out of the threads which means $$$$. If its a repeated sound, you might have blown up a spark plug? Sometimes if you crack a plug, you will hear a really loud popping or knocking sound based on engine rpm. Hopefully its the plug and a couple bucks

well, i towed her in and ford said i blew a spark plug. this same thing happened to my brother's 99 GT. is this a common problem? is there a any recall? this is the fourth incident that i have heard locally.

No recall on it. There are a lot of people mad about it because it is frequent not only on the Mustangs but with other vehicles too. Time to upgrade!

God this really pisses me out off about Ford. Why in the HELL wouldn't they make a recall? Obviously it's not an uncommon thing.

We need to make a sticky on this topic. Everyone should torque down to 13lbs with little to minimal amounts of anti seize. Plugs should be checked every oil change. If everyone did this, we wouldn't have these blow out threads....

Would this prevent a spark plug from blowing out? I'm not questioning your post, I really dunno soi I'm asking. Has that been the issue - over-torquing?

Yes, and no. If you are using the OLD motorcraft plug with the shorter threads, then chances are it will still blow out, even if you are torqing it down good. But if you use the new plugs, or another aftermarket brand, they will stay in there if you torque them to 13lbs. It is recommended to torque them between 7-14lbs, but I would have them tighter. I don't use anti seize either. The plugs come out fine.

spark plug threads

is it true that the heads on 99' mustangs only have 2 threads holding them in??
also, if i upgrade to say, patriot stage II heads, do they have more than 2 threads?

Ford factory heads have a Aluminum 4 thread insert in them. Patriots have a 4 thread Steel insert in them and they have a upgrade 8 thread steel insert too
