Starter problem HELP

Is there a way to test if the starter is good without removing it first? I remenber on my older mustang I was able to crank the starter with the ignition position on and using a screwdriver on a piece on the hood. Is it the same with a 95 mustang. And if so were's the piece?

you got a starter solenoid like the foxes do? it is on our driver side firewall.

sorry to be an ignoramus - i thought i was in 5.0 tech. sorry.
