The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

2. "Hands-off-the- face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap a mosquito).

3. Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.

5. Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablet s, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

I suggest you pass this on to your entire e-list. You never know if thosewho will pay attention to it will stay healthier because of it. But it's worth doing.

Well, apparently H1N1 is pretty bad. My cousin's son has it right now and he's in real bad shape.

Eh, depends on the person, a buddy of mine had it and he said it made him cough, and he threw up once, not too bad if you ask me. Different people handle it better than others

Neighbor got the h1n1 shot and I watched the ambulance and firetruck show up and EMT's take him away. Thought he was ok but got hives and went into shock. Ended up EMT's saved his life and gave him a shot of adrenaline and other countermeasures to keep him alive. Recently a study came out that the shot has been proven to cause sterility and birth defects. I refuse to get shots unless they are proven with 10+ years of human guinea pigs aka, those who have gone before me.

What's odd is, out of my cousin's 3 kids, Hunter is the one who never gets sick even if the whole household is.

I'm not getting the flu shot...either one.

My mom and cousin had the H1N1 early this year when it first broke. They described it as a bad, ACHY flu. Were down for a week and bounced back. I was in close proximity with my mom and never caught it thankfully.

We had our H1N1 awareness training at work. Basically they are implementing a bunch of strategies and anticipating a 40% ABSENTEE RATE at work. SO basically when the flu starts to hit, i have permission to work at home when i can, which is pretty sweet actually (mostly computer work...documentation and CAD modeling, drawings, quoting, ordering, etc) which I do now sometimes, but we will have much more leeway.

Some of the other policies include passive screening but if it hits hard, the company will step up to active screening of visitors and workers...just like at the airports.

You know what. If you eat right exercise and get enough rest your body can fight off alot and you'll avoid alot of illness. All without shots or meds
