Steering column replacement

How hard is it to do it? I could probably do it myself, but I'm not sure I have the time, what with the kids' schedules and the honey do list.

And even if I did have the time, I'm not sure I have the will. I am still reeling from my last project, where I replaced the mid-pipe on my Camry to save the mechanic's fees. That ended up being a 6 hour job (for me at least). OMG, that was not at all worth the money I saved.

How many hours would it take for a mechanic to do it?

It is held on by 4 bolts, then you gotta disconnect the steering arm and 1 wiring harness.

It took me less then 30mins the first time I tried to do it ever...

Labora is 100% correct, but he's oversimplifying the job. You'll have six bolts to undo to get to the steering column - you have the knee panel, then a metal panel under that, and then a support brace under THAT. I don't remember what tranny you have - auto's have a cable attached to the column that needs to be removed.

Oh, be sure to disconnect the battery 15 minutes or more beforehand - you'll be disconnecting the airbag after all.

Are you re-using your steering wheel? If so, add another hour or so on top of this. You'll need to rent a steering wheel puller to remove and install the wheel.

Be sure to get a steering column from a GT/Cobra, or you'll have to transfer some components from your current column to the V6 one. Not impossible, but will take some time.

Overall, I would say this was an afternoon job.

yes, i'll be reusing the steering wheel. i can rent a puller from autozone. i have take that off and put it back on more than a couple of times when trying to figure out the problem, so i am familiar with that part at least.

i got a column from prestigemustang ... i'm pretty sure it was out of a gt, but i'll double check.

Not sure what else you need to know. I've done this swap on both my Mustangs, so it's pretty routine by now. Oh, also get some electrical contact cleaner for the connections - you may get an airbag light afterward. The airbag system detects for "high resistance" on connectors - I ran into this once when I disconnected the airbag connector under the dash. Sprayed some contact cleaner on both sides of the connector, and it was good as new.

removing 67 wood steering wheel

hi there...new to the site..would like to know if anyone has tried to remove a 67 wood shelby steering wheel...there are no holes to attach a puller..thanks jim
