So a stroker kit is designed to give you a longer stroke on the pistons with a new crankshaft, piston rods and possibly new pistons. Thereby increasing cubic displacement and horsepower/torque.

So its a simpler way of getting a bigger engine instead of overboring the cylinders.

Is that the basic jist of things?

just about,
on some stroked setups you can still use stock rods and it only effects the crank in that situation for instance a 393 Stroker uses a 3.850 stroke crank but the same 5.956" Rods as a stock 351W

Some stroked setups also have you overboring the cylinders and notching (to prevent rods from hits things.) But yes, it's basically a simple way of getting a larger displacement engine. Neat trick huh?

I once spoke about this with a guy I was in MOS school with (he had prviously been a car mechanic) and he gave me this look of wtf? and promptly told me to forget everything I'd just said. This guy also told me about belt driven turbo charger and exhaust driven super chargers (in addition to the vice versa) so that might explain things?

My 65 coupe has a basically stock "A" code 289 4v with the exception of the Edelbrook carb and the Mallory ignition.
What would be the next step up in a stroker kit that could be used without any block work?
And/or, what would be a good drop-on head replacement for more power?

Was thinking at the least, once the suspension is reworked, that I would add an Edelbrook Performer RPM intake, some good shorty headers and a dual exhaust. (The car came with the crappy single exhaust with the transverse mounted muffler)

As far as "stroking" a 289 far as I know its not possible, the lowest I know you can stroke is a 302ci motor, also wanted to state you dont need a stroker to get high HP and torque there are many other ways for around the same price, you might try searching for the member blue66tang, he had a very heavily modded 289 making serious power, he had a few videos, etc..

or if you choose the new motor route Id most definately go roller 302-351ci

I bought my 347 stroker kit from my machine shop.

For $950 my stroker kit came with pistons, rods, crank, bearings and rings, basically everything needed to stroke a 289 or 302 block to 347 cid (yes, a 289 block can be stroked to a 347). Of course there is some machine also involved as the bottom end of the cylinder walls need to be notched to clear the rods, but that's pretty simple.

289 and 302 are the same motor give or take...so any stroker kit for a 302 works in a 289

a 302 is a stroked 289 with different heads is it not? That's why my heads have 289 stamped into them and the block has 302 stamped into it.

i prefer the term belt driven air cleaner


oh and also early 289's(cant remember exact years) have a shorter sleeve so thats why they dont like to stroke them

289 blocks work fine for strokers. Some would say better since the old blocks are stouter than the 5.0 versions. Of course, you forego the benefits of the roller-cam unless you get a retrofit kit.

I had heard of folks using 302 blocks with 289 internals running up to 14:1 with lots of boost but never using a stock 289 so didnt know for sure
