Hi everyone im new to this site but couldn't really find the info I neeeded off the web so decided to see what I could get from here. I have a 98gt convertible that has a blown head. Instead of just replacing the head, id like to take this chance to swap a 5.0 that I have into it.

Ive put alot of money into the 5.0, kept it fuel injected, but because its SD never really had the chance to enjoy the car because I couldn't get it tuned.

My main question is what do I need to keep it fuel injected, convert it to MAF, and swap it into my 98. Will the 98 MAF wiring harness work with the 5.0 if I get a computer that's MAF for my 5.0 block? Or do I need to buy a whole new setup to get it to work? I know there's more to it that just dropping it in and im not worried bout that. My main concern is how to convert it and what I will need. But any advice will be appreciated. Thanks

At the very least you will need the harness and computer for a 5.0. A 94-95 harness should fit well with the 98 body, but those computers were very sensitive to cams and other mods. If the harness will fit try and find an A9L computer if the car is a manual. You will also need to swap the transmission because the 4.6 has a different bell housing pattern, and I think the K-member is different for the 4.6 cars. It could be done, but it would probably be cheaper and easier to fix the head, sell the 98, then buy a 94-95 GT and drop your 5.0 in it.

Hey I just have one more question...not trying to sound like a noob but if I replace the head, do I have to have the car retuned? I don't see why I would but a buddy of mine is telling me I might. Just want a second opinion.

In all honesty, you're best to find a low mileage PI engine from an '01-up Crown Vic/Marquis, or better yet an '02-'05 Explorer and swap one of those engine into your car instead. The engine is almost a direct bolt in and you'll pick up 35+horsepower in the process.

For what you'll pay in parts and labour to replace your head, you'll get half way to a complete engine swap.

You'll spend triple that trying to get your 5.0L into it. If it were me, I'd sell the 5.0L to help finance the PI engine swap and stick with the modular engine.

+1 on the PI motor. It's simply my opinion, but that's the route I'd go. Low mileage PI 4.6s can be found for <$750. I paid $600 for my 30k mile PI motor, complete with everything other than AC, alternator, P/S pump, and exhaust manifolds, which you should have anyway from the '98. Definitely look for ones out of Town Cars and Grand Marquis. For whatever reason, they're a lot cheaper than ones out of Mustangs, even though they're practically identical.
