Hey guys, I have a Taurus fan running through a bosch 75 amp relay which I activate through a toggle switch. The problem is it will run fine for a few days but it will eventual blow the 30 amp inline fuse holder that runs from post 30 on the relay to the positive cable on the battery. I am only using the low speed wire from the Taurus fan because that cools my car just fine.
What do you think is causing my fuse to blow? it seems the 30 amp inline fuse is only 12 guage wire and all the diagrams I look at call for 10 guage wire from the relay to the power source. I have a larger maxi fuse holder with a 60 amp fuse that is 10 gauge wire. Should I be using that or is 60 amps to big?
what is odd is the fuse does not blow when I turn the fan on but when it has been running for a while. like I said it will work fine for a few days and then it will below.
Just in case, here is how I have it hooked up to relay.
#30 - 12 gauge wire and inline fuse to battery
#87 - 10 gauge wire from fan with green led light soldered in
#85 16 gauge wire to ground on body
#86 - 16 gauge to toggle switch.

Thanks!

well, I put my maxi fuse holder back in with a 40 maxi amp fuse and that one just blew. It actually blew faster than the 30 ampe inline fuse. Should I be using a bigger maxi fuse? I am only running the low speed.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You should be running 10g wires on all connections. 16g is way to thin and is causing the fuse to pop.

I'm now running 10 gauge from the fan to relay. 10. Gauge from relay to maxi fuse to battery. I am running 18 gauge from toggle switch to relay and 18 gauge from relay to ground. From all the diagrams I have been seeing, 10 gauge wire is only used for the fan wiring and power source to the relay. The rest of the wires from the relay are a smaller gauge. Is this wrong?

Thanks!

like I said, run 10g wire on all the connections. Also, I don't like using a relay and switch as that fan pulls enough amps to blow that 40 amp fuse on start up. That is why most people including myself use a variable speed controller that ramps up the fan. The other option is using a volvo relay setup.

He can use lighter wire on the power and ground leg that operates the solenoid portion of the relay. Only the two fan power legs need to be 10ga. The solenoid in the relay draws under an amp, so no need for heavy gauge wire there. 16ga is fine for terminal 85 and 86

The fuse that the factory used for these fans (Taurus, sn95, etc) is a 30A slow-blow maxi fuse. If you use a standard 30A fuse you'll blow this all the time. Using a slow-blow type fuse will allow a temp spike of more than rated amperage for a short period of time during startup. You def want the fuse to be e weakest link and not the wiring, so don't up the fuse amperage to fix this issue

Best advice you have gotten so far. Take it and run with it.
An electric motor has a large surge current when it starts up, so a slo-blow fuse is a necessity.

Thanks, would a 30 amp maxi fuse work or do I need to get a specific slow blow fuse? I found some exposed wire which I think was causing my fuses to blow but I want to make sure I have the right kind of fuse in. I have a 40 amp maxi now but I will go down to 30 maxi or slow blow?

Let me know.

Thanks.

I believe by design all Maxi-fuse are the slow-blow type. The standard blade fuses are fast blow.

Just googled fuse box layout for a 3.8 L Taurus and they use a 50A maxi-fuse. Seems high to me. I'd prob try a 30A or 40A fuse and carry some spares. You def want the fuse to be the weakest link.
