Figured i'd make a new post for anyone who doesnt come into my other thread. Tryin to get my tko600 back into the car from under....got any ideas?

get a friend to do it for u


i used a jack to lift it almost all the way inplace (i held the trans and had someone else jack it up) then only basically had to push it over into place. the TKO's are mush heavier than a T5

also if u cant get the trans all the way in start the top 2 bolts if possible and have someone push the clutch down, that should free up the clutch disk and give u a bit more play to slide the trans in the rest of the way

man..I had to put a 3550 in my car not too long ago...by myself on jackstands. It was horrible...but I'm alive, lol.

I used a wide-base jack and got it up in the air and had a jackstand securing the tail. Then I went to the top of the car and used like 4 HEAVY duty zipties to hold it just in case something slipped...which, btw, something did slip and thank god those things held. I wouldn't have been crushed or anything...but the 3550 would have been banged up a bit.

then, I somehow got the input shaft in the hole and I was happy I did miss it a couple times though..outta practice I guess

anywho, I wrestled that thing for 4 hours trying to get it the last inch or so and finally got someone to press the clutch pedal while I wrestled it around and I finally got it to go all the way in...and I laid on the ground laughing out loud and cursing numerous times.

never wanna do that by myself again....that fugger was heavy and I didn't have any leverage at all.

Get it waaaay up in the air.

I bought a tranny jack for my 4R70W. That thing was freakin' heavy and stabbing it between the longtubes was a PITA. Still took a few guys to wrestle it up.

I had no problem putting mine in. Only used 2 jackstands under the front and had them set probably 15" high or so. I just put the tranny on the jack and rolled it under from the front. Then jacked it up and slid it in with the help of a friend. Had him hold the tranny up while I bolted it up. Aside from the weight, it's not too hard.

btw, Stanger007.....is that a 71-73 Mustang I spy next to the vert?

I got one of my STRONGER friends to bench press the trans up into place while I put the bolts in it!!!

2 guys... and the TKO is a HEAVY trans...

Me and my bud have done my T5 a couple times and his TKO once... the TKO is worse...

Lift it into place, once most of the way have the less strong of the two of you push the clutch in so it can be fully seated... Then bolt away...

Sho is - that's my '72 Mach 1. It was my first Mustang - bought it when I was 18 and it got me started into this hobby. Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

Fun car, doubt I will ever sell it despite how much crap I have to do to it to make it new again. It's my daily driver this week while I'm doing some work on my '95. It is a blast to drive in traffic... gets a lotta looks.

I took my T-56 out this year to put a new clutch in. I got it out by myself, so I tried to put it in by myself. Not going to happen. I am not sure how heavy the T-56 is to the TKO, but it was a bit too much for me to handle alone. So I got my brother to help me.
We put a jack under the front and a jack under the back. Then we raised it up high enough, and he stabilized the tranny while I messed with fine tuning the height, and got it slid together.
It wasn't too bad with 2 people, but next time I am going to have a tranny jack.

if you can gain access to a pit, Nate, do it.

my brother-in-law and i took out my t5 a couple times, and installed the 3550, using the pit at his parent's place. makes it a LOT easier being able to stand, lift, and hoist the tranny into place.

I use long studs to guide the trans on with the mounting ears. Then pull them one at a time and replace with the hex head bolts.

I do not like any stress put on the front when in the clutch disk.


I used to do a few cast iron 4spds long ago the same way.

Hey guys, i used my 3.5ton jack to lift it up, since its pad was pretty big it balanced it pretty well for the most part. Once it was up at just about the right level i was able to pick it up the last inch and slide it in....so all is well THANKS!

How does the TKO compare to the AODE. Cause Ive lifted the AODE and thats a heavy ass sumbitch

Once I had one of buff friends hold up my t-5 while I wiggled it and slid it in. The next time It was me and one of my smaller friends. Third time I was by myself. If the car is high enough and you can get the tranny on a jack and slide that under the car then you can just pump up the jack and wiggle it in. Or you and a buddy could get it on the jack while its under the car and then lift it up. But yea it's not something you can do by yourself since that 600 is so heavy. I wasn't too worried about the t-5 falling on me but I'd def. worry about a 600 falling on me.
