test Drive

U guys have to be kidding me about too much power. the car is not that fast, has airbags, and a seat belt. Last time I check so does a honda. Last time I check I wrecked my honda being stupid and young. then i bought a Jetta VR6, wrapped that around a tree too. Has nothing to do with the type of car, but who is behind the wheel. The mustang handles much better than a honda and I think I would want my kid to have a car that handles better.

and then for the haters. you are only hating on this rich ***** because you are broke and probably return bottles to make your payment. IF the kids parents can afford to buy them a car, god bless them, don't hate, get a second job and maybe you could 2 one day. When I was 16 I was making more money than my parents combined income, and bought all my cars on my own. Now I have a career and am pretty sucessful and I can not wait to spoil my kid with the things my parents could not provide. This is America and most of the American parents I know just want their kids to have a better life then they did when they were growing up. don't hate because your life did not turn out that way

All you guys are soo funny! It has nothing to do with age or maturity. Show me any person that bought a new gt that doesnt like to put their foot into it fron time to time. Anyone who doesnt like to see how fast they can get to 60 or 100 every so often. If you find one, ask them why they even bought the car? A ~60hp(?) echo will get you from point a to b. Besides when i got my first gt when i was 18 I was very mature for my age and I still did some stupid stuff in it. Heck five years later and when I get my new one I bet I will do some dumb things. So the pedal on the right is too much fun no matter how old or mature you are. What it does boil down to is driving exp. yes at 16 most have had little to none of this which makes more powerful cars more dangerous. How much is hard to say if ya dont know the person. You alsohave to take into account that the new ones with t/c are safer for younger/inexperienced drivers simply cause with it on you cant break it lose like you could with the older models. But we can generalize. As far as it being purchased for him, more power to ya brother. I would have loved to have one when I turned 16. Will I buy one for my kids at 16, of course not. Ill get them something with 150 or less hp to start, like a focus for ex. OK im done srry for the length but i hope it clears things up.

Sanctus-you sound like a great kid, but your success in school and on the football field do not entitle you to anything in my book. Since when do you get rewarded for doing the basics in school or playing a game that you love? You're supposed to be playing football because you like it.

Childhood job # 1 is to work your parents for everything you can possibly get out of them.

Parental job # 1 is to make sure you survive to adulthood; Parental job # 2 is to instill some values into your butt so you can make it in the real world.

I don't expect you to understand that, and I fully expect you to sell your parents the Brooklyn Bridge if they will buy it. That's why the parents are normally in charge and not the teenager.

I also think you ought to pay at least half the price of the car and insurance. It's important to know the value of things and to appreciate things instead of being handed everything.

My mom ran into a girl at the convenience store the other day... about 16 or 17 in a GT Convertible.

If you are as responsible as you say then get the Mustang...I personally wouldn't recommend a 300hp beast for your first car but i'm not your dad either.

If you are responsible enough to drive a brand new Mustang than you are responsible enough to pay for the car and the insurance too. I owned my first brand new car when I was 38... because I couldn't afford a brand new car before then.

Hey. I'm sure you've all read my dumb posts and pretty much know all this but I'll just spit it out again...

I'm 18 and looking for my second car. I own a '99 Ranger which is in great condition. I've been driving for two and a half years and have never been in a wreck, never gotten a ticket, and am a pretty good driver. Sure I have the occasional F-up by ALMOST hitting something, but I'm experienced enough (and lucky enough) to get myself out of situations like that. I know my peers are a bunch of morons but not everyone is. I know a kid that has wrecked four cars and now owns a high powered Z28 (totaled one because he was racing some guy in his Tiburon and lost control on the highway). I even see people at my work coming in with their son's that are 16 or 17 that blew the motors on their brand new Cobras or Saleen S/Cs. Now I totally disagree with buying a kid a nice car like that. Thats just STUPID. I paid for my Ranger and I'm paying for my Mustang. Not half....all of it. I can at least speak for myself when I say that I wasn't an immature driver at 17. Some people (KEYWORD SOME) are good drivers. Sure I did the occasional burn out and got stuck four wheeling in my 2WD truck....but that's an innocent mistake and I've learned from it. No damage no big deal. Now I know I may be too young for 300hp and a $24k car, but I feel I'm mature enough for one.

One more time let me say it.... I TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH BUYING A KID A NICE CAR. Make him/her work for their own vehicle. Otherwise they wont appreciate it and jack it all up. "My dad'll fix it...lets do donuts and race everything with a spoiler" Some people just don't deserve nice things.

Pliskin-the key here is that you're paying for it. It's potentially dangerous for any age driver who is incompetent to have 300 hp to throw around.

I doubt many stang owners of any age will blow their engine, as some of your friends did, if they paid for the car.

It's rental car syndrome...who takes care of a rental?

If this was my son, my inner kid would be screaming to let him have it now since I never had one at that age. But after consideration I think I would have to say no to the brand new GT. I eould probably consider a V6 but even thats kinda pricey for someone to start on. I like to think that I would be willing to buy him a older GT, like a SN95 or a 5.0 Fox. So if he does 1/2 the things I did as a new driver, in a Ranger no less, and isnt as lucky as I was then its not a 28K car in pieces.

nobody regardless of maturity has the driving acumen at 16 for that kind of car. If the parents have the money to burn and dont care that the kid is a hazzard theres no law to stop them. If it were my kid and I had the wherewithall to give them a new car I would rather they had something like a saturn that is engineered for safety. If you happen to get such a hot ride stay off the pedal, having had a 69 Dodge P/U with a 440 dropped in it at 16, those tickets can come in bunches and a restricted license is no fun! Ahh but we learn from our mistakes dont we.
