The effects of horsepower?

As some of you might know, I blew my diff out in Nov. and last night I pulled it out, removed the brakes, pulled the axels, then removed the 3rd member. Until this point it was all speculation on what I had broke, but the idea was that a bearing went out or that I had broken one or two teeth off either the ring or pinion gear. If only I were so lucky. Words don't do near as well as what seeing the damage does, so without further addue, here you go.

So it looks like I need to get a replacement pinion retainer and carrier housing for an 8". So what cars can I pull one off of, or were would be a good place to look? I have already tryed Ebay and found nothing.

I've manged to reduce spider gears to dust, but I have never torn up the R&P like that example!

A good source for a used 8" rear is the nearest late 70's Granada or Mercury Monarch. These cars and the Maverick/Comet were the last ones to use 8" rears

I found an 8" carrier in a junkyard tht is in great shape. It came out of a 67 stang. It has been stored inside a van and would need minor cleanup. I just bought a 9" from them and only paid 50 bucks. Could probably get the 8 for 40. Let me know and we can work out shipping and all other costs if you want it.

I doubt it was due to horsepower. Probably something loosened up and set off the catastrophe. In my stock Dodge 4x4 parts hauler I had the pinion nut loosen up a year or so ago. When the nut loosened it allowed the pinion to wobble, break teeth off the ring gear, and then get wedged between the carrier and the housing. This basically locked both rear axles and sent the truck into a skid. The drive shaft pulled completely out of the front slip yoke (2 piece driveshaft) and wedged itself into the asphalt. Thank God it only happened at 45mph and not at 75 when I was on the freeway minutes earlier. Rear end catastrophes are bad news

I'd call into question the history of the diff and how well it was set-up. If it had been flogged or poorly and incorrectly installed, such a catastropy is understandable.

Ya, the title was just something that popped into my head. I think that the cause of it all was the front pinion bearing going out due to vibration from my pinion angle being out of spec, which was all because of my shot rear suspension and the low ride height. The whole rear end was oringinal from the factory, so it had worked fine for 36 years until something happend when it was in my possision. Hopefully it won't take me too long to find a replacement pinion retainer and carrier housing.

i hate when that happens............ i did mine #'s of times i hate the smell or gear oil now

I still got that complete 8 inch rear and I'm comming up to livermore tomorrow morning more than likely to pick up a motor. It'll all come down to pics.
