Hmmmmm...

There was a thread a second ago on this very forum about a potential exploit at another site. I went to comment on it and it said I did not have permission.

Now, that thread is gone...

Here is the comment I was going to put in that thread:

"AVG says Corral contains potentially harmful software...

Google says 44 of the 739 pages it looked at downloaded and installed malicious software on 9-10-2010...

18 unique exploits and 4 trojans...

I am staying away - trojans are a major PITA..."

I saw the thread last night and replied to it with what I had experienced yesterday. I thought the thread to be more of an informational and helpful post because many people on this forum are also on that forum and might unknowingly get hit with whatever was going around over there.

I viewed it as informational / helpful as well. Kind of a "beware of virus" sign if you will...

I won't speculate about why it may or may not have been deleted. I know there is a rule about that in the sticky up top...

It may be cleared up now. I've been over there multiple times yesterday and today, but I have my security settings set so none of the ad windows populate. One time yesterday I had a warning asking if I wanted to allow something to be installed from some web addy and I selected no.

The warnings have to do with web browser exploits - bugs that let someone write a program to use the browser to infect your computer. This can be done through JavaScript or simply viewing a Flash movie. It's just crazy. I avoid the problem by installing a Firefox plugin called NoScript. It disables JavaScript (and almost all Flash movies) on all pages except the ones you choose. This lets me surf the Corral safely even with the warnings. It's a PITA to have to turn JavaScript on whenever I need it, but I'd rather be safe.

As the original poster of the thread, it was my intention to:
1. Ask if anyone else had a warning, and
2. Let users know that there may be a security issue on the site.

I've read the Sticky above and I fail to see which rule was transgressed. Someone care to paste the rule violated into a reply so I can read it.

As a community, I would think members have a responsibility to alert others to potentially harmful events and/or actions in areas we would usually frequent.

As I read this I feel it is my duty to share....

I was on that site the other day and looking the classifieds....screen froze up, so I went to exit, a window come up with an issue, are you sure you want exit , I hit yes, and a scan popped up and I could't exit, then my computer said I had a severe threat......I have seen the same scan and threat message on another laptop last year and it is in fact some type of malicious issue.....right away I went to yahoo and when I clicked on a link F_CK BOOK popped up...it looked like facebook but was filled with adult content, no matter what clicked on it came back.....so beware...

You'd think in this situation a mod would explain why. But i guess the forum rules are more important than the forum members computer safety?

You get your issue fixed? Just curious, because that is definitely the signs of a trojan infection - programs being downloaded and installed without your permission (i.e. bogus antivirus scanners). I recently removed one from a business server that had propagated to all of the user machines - what a major PITA that was...

Just as a sort of "putting it out there" sort of thing:

AVG Antivirus Free - I have been using it for years now and I have not had an issue with malware, or virus, or whatever you want to call it. It is not a resource hog like some of the other common antivirus software packages (ie Symantec and McAfee). And, when your subscription is up (which is never since it is free), it doesn't decide to make your computer inoperable and prevent you from uninstalling it.

In case anyone is lacking in the antivrus protection department, here is a link:

Just follow the links for the free version. You have to be a little bit diligent to locate the correct link for the free version, but if you are on the internet, you should be able to manage it. It is also available on CNET, but if you use the AVG page as the portal, you are ensured of getting the most up to date version. If you install it, make sure you set it up to auto update

Also, there are several tools that can passively block bad websites. Of course, their effectiveness is dependent on running the program once in a while and updating the definitions file, as the free versions do not have auto update features most times. But, if it is between paying $50 and taking some responsibility for my own computer, I don't mind taking the responsibility...

You have to scroll down to see the download link for Spybot. If you install it, make sure you choose to use internet protections (I think it is called TeaTimer???).

Spybot is a bit of a resource hog. It takes a bit to load on initial startup of the machine, and if you are still running anything less than 1GB of RAM, it will slow your machine down.

The combination of these three completely free programs has kept my machines virus free for years now. One thing to note, if you already have an antivirus installed, there is a good possibility that installing these programs on top of that will cause conflicts. Especially if you have McAfee.

Should you have an active infection, I have found that Malwarebytes is incredibly good at removing most things floating around out there. Maybe not everything, but certainly the most common offenders. Just use the free version.

Also, I have found Firefox far superior to Internet Explorer. Just my preference, but I like it better. Plus, it is very easy to block Flash...

And I still don't know what rule I broke. I didn't post a link because that would potentially expose someone to whatever was lurking there. Perhaps the moderator that pulled the thread would be so kind to point me in the direction of "correctness".

I'll see what I can do - didn't know about the original thread though (I wasn't responsible for it).

FWIW - IIRC, links/discussion (usually of the negative variety) of other message boards has been somewhat of a "no no." Might be something in the terms of service or one of the "rules" stickies - think it was more to do with "forum warring" and the like though...so it could have just been deleted for that very reason (and not because of the content itself).

I also noticed the "other" site having lots of antivirus activity lately - enough of it to keep me from visiting there until it's resolved, if ever (new site owner, et al). LOL

No it's not (hell, it's not much of a technical forum period...lol), but like we've said, many, many users here are on there also and the post was just warning people to watch it if going there because they currently had a trojan/malware going around. It was not intended to bash that site.

As a corral regular Ill shed some light on the subject. The new owners of corral.net have been a bit loose with who their allowing to advertise on their site. Its brought up some issues with security lately, and has been resolved by the new owners at least for the moment.

My is advice if you have a warning pop up. Run.

Well I went back to my original post and I think I now see the transgression. It probably was in the screen print warning identifying the site, now dutifully removed. It caught me by surprise as I had never had one of these warnings before. That's why I asked if anyone else had a similar caution that day.
