I was just wondering what you guy's are setting your timing at on the older mustangs? I am trying to help out my grandfather with a engine swap, and wanted to know how to beat the pinging. Also, what octane of gas are you running. I think it's a combination of low octane fuel and timing. Thanks for any help.

usually you want to set your timing so that the total advance doesnt go over 40. If you have a stock distributor, there are plates underneath that have values attached, and they can be reversed as needed to curve the distributor to get the desired timing. You may not have to go thru all that, you may just need to retard your timing a bit to get the ping to stop. My '68 302 w/stock ignition is set at 10 degrees initial timing and at 3500 rpm it gets to 40 degrees total advance. I also use 93 octane and almost never get a ping.

If the motor's got a stock cam, then you'll need to retard the timing to around 6-8 degrees initial and/or use a better grade of gas ( 91-93 octane premium) to fix the pinging. With a larger cam profile, you could get away with cheaper gas, due to more valve overlap to reduce the dynamic compression ratio
