timing gears or timing chain?

I'm sorry if someone asked this before. I did a search but nothing really came up. Whats better timing gears or a timing chain?

Chain or belt drive! The slip on gear sets (although cool) put a lot of stress on the front bearing surfaces.

I had one before, it sounded like a supercharger and no one wanted to race me anymore.

The best really is an aftermarket timing belt with cog gear setup. Although definitely not as stout as a timing gear setup or to an extent, a double roller, it is the easiest on bearings because it acts as a harmonic device and absorbs vibrations.

Me too? I dont see how...Ive just heard they put more harshness on the valvetrain since like a chain absorbs some little vibrations and the gears dont. A plus on the gears is it spreads out the torque from the crank between the 2 gears, and also gears cant stretch like a chain can (especially with stiff valve springs and big cam). I have Edelbrock Accu-Drive timing gears that i got off another motor I had and they do sound pretty sick, and I seriously had about 6 kids think I had a supercharger but if I ever tear back down the motor Im going to slap a chain on it. The gears do sound cool but theyre really loud when you have your hood open and is pretty hard to find a ticking rocker or something over the noise of the gears. I just put mine on because I didnt have money for a new chain set and these were practically brand new from a motor I bought to use the heads off of. I dont no much about Belt drives, I dont see many people use them except for high hp applications. If i ever got a belt drive I would get a Jesel setup, Ive heard alot of good things about them and I could get a niice discount on one when I get back home.

I woud go with a nice double roller chain unless racing is full time. Gears are very noisey.

You have just got to LOVE the sound of gears though (at least for me. ).

Dont forget to factor in machine work for the cam mating surface, if needed.

Money is not really a factor, I'm just to the point of needing one or the other. Ebay has some nice billet ones. I think I'm going the chain route. I don't want peeps thinking I have a supercharger even though I do. Thanks for the help guys

They do sound good... Boy do they sound good. But if you have to figure out an exhaust leak / lifter tick, you are screwed because they are very loud. I had one and loved it, but it sure made problem solving an issue.

The thought on added stress is that the gear set transfer's all of the crank harmonics into the cam. This harmonic is what causes the wear on the bearing surfaces. A chain instead can vibrate a little without transfering all of that energy.

Yah I have gear drive in my new motor, but it has yet to be run, motor is not installed yet, I loooove gear drives , some people say you get sick of the noise but since its only a weekend driver I'm not worried.

Lol,I want to see how technical this can get...

It is true that the belt and to some degree the chain will absorb some vibration/harmonics,but a gear will always stay true with timing events.

But,if you all are wondering,we use a FRPP timing chain with the indexed crank gear.I think it was around $100 buck,and had the steel gears,double roller,and came with the heavy duty steel thrust plate!And its doing just fine with a solid roller and +8000rpm's.

IMO a belt just kinda scares me...(what if it broke?things happen...)
