How come when I take my spout out the car runs fine but with it in it pings horribly? Why is my computer doing that?

When you pull your spout out, there is no advance...only base timing.

what would be some reasons that computer would advance the the timing so much it pings like crazy?

Is your base timing at 10*? because I'm betting that your hypertech chip advances the timing. What octane fuel do you run? Do you have any check engine lights?

If your base timing is already bumped up, your hypertech may be adding an additional increase in timing. Set your base timing at 10*, fill her up with good gas, and let the chip do it's thing.

Sorry, I should have clarified, I took my hypertech chip out about 2 months ago. I heard they didn't do anything but advance the timing and I felt no difference when I installed it. I do have a c/e light come on every once in a while, but it's related to the egr valve. This only started recently, like 2 days ago. I pulled the spout in frustration to see if it was driveable and it drives like new with the spout removed...

as everyone has said, try higher octane gas or back timing down some. some guys do run locked out timing (set it in the 20's and keep the SPOUT out).

for some, cleaning the MAF helps.

oh yeah, what is wrong with your EGR? the puter will dial in a ton of timing when EGR gasses are being introduced (EGR gasses dilute the mixture, making it less volatile). if there is a malfunction and no inert (EGR) gasses are being introduced, but the puter is still dialing in a bunch of timing, that can certainly lead to pinging.

good luck.

Hmmm good call, didn't realize the egr made the computer react that way. As for gas, well, I always put 93 in it... I'm going to try and clean the mass air flow. Whats the best way to go about that? When I last looked at it the filament looked rather fragile...
