A kid at my school just bought a 99 Cobra. What kinds of things would I have to do to have a shot a beating him in a race? Thanks!

nitrous - the NA route is a long and arduous one.

honestly put a PI intake on your car some 4.10's, midpipe and catback and an intake and race him. I think you'd do pretty damn good against it. My friends 00GT with stock gears and an intake and midpipe and catback can beat a stock 99 cobra. I'd ridden in both and the GT feels faster for damn sure.

Easiest way would be a good nitrous kit. What kind of mods do you have already and what tranny??? You will also want to work on your driving, suspension, and tires too.

Heh. Maybe it's just me, but that doesn't seem like a real priority for a high school student.

What mods does he have? That is the big ticket here.

No offense, but it seems that your friend can't drive worth a damn, especially if your 1/4 time is a 14.6. On average, most 96-01 Cobras are deep 14's, and in the 13's with a few bolt-ons.

Echoing what everybody else has said here, your best bet is nitrous. Grab a kit for a couple hundred, and work on your launches, maybe grab a set of Nitto drag radials to better insure your grip.

While the cams, gears, and full exhaust would be nice, even at my prices, it's rather pricy, even more if you're not doing it yourself and paying labor for install. The exhaust won't give you that much more power, and neither will the gears, but you'll have better acceleration. The Cams would be nice, but even if all of these run at their advertised gains, and being generous for even more that still won't touch what you'll get out of a 100 or 125 shot, short of a supercharger.

dang i was hoping to post in this thread and be the first to say spray but i guess pretty much everyone already covered it lol.

yea man spray it cause those cobras are easy mid 13 second cars. just get a $500 spray system and put the 100 shot jet in and game over. pretty simple and no tuning needed.

The only mods I have right now is a bbk air intake and a set of PI Cams that I have yet to install... I still want to put an offroad h or x pipe on sometime soon other than that I don't really know what direction to go.

Almost forgot my tranny is a 4R70W.

I don't really want to go with spray though... But if I get enough money and don't see any other options I probably will go with that. On a side note the kid that has the Cobra is talkin' so much crap... Yesterday he said that he could run mid 12's in it and beat an LS1 Camaro hands down. He's so full of it. Thanks for all the help.

What do they run? My 00 GT with completley bald tires and a WET SLIPPERY track ran 14.1 @ 101 mph with an o/r H, K&N intake and mufflers. Also a plenum with no throttle body..i'm gonna have to do something about that

The Cobra or the Camaro?
Z28 Camaro w/ LS1 runs 13.193 1/4 mile
99 Mustang Cobra runs 13.300 1/4 mile

My friend has run 13.3 with his bullitt with bolt ons. I think all he really has is exhaust and 4.10's and 315's out back.

stock 99 cobras were turds...they would only run high 13s with a good driver...I believe they were rated at 13.9

With a high school student behind the wheel the thing would be lucky to run anywhere near that fast.

With a couple bolt ons and gears with the auto I would bet you will give him you a run if not beat him...just let off by like 70. lol

Oh and I know of a guy who ran 12.6 with a bolt on,weight reductin, NPI gt on slicks.

Funny how everybody knows someone who ran a such and such.

Even if you're still making 260, and the Cobra is still making 320, your automatic is going to rob you of some horsepower. Plus, if he has done a couple of launches before, he'll have a rough idea of his optimal launch rpm, while you're pretty much going to leave from idle or do something even worse than by revving in neutral and dropping it into drive.

So, uh, how's that nitrous sounding now?
