to many cranks to start

96' GT 5sp Stock with 125,000 mi

It takes about 2 sec longer to start than it should. It runs fine and the fuel pump sounds to be priming alright.

What could be the main factor behind these long starts?

Could it be the fuel pump? Starter? Coil packs? I am curious because the car drive fine.

Oh and my buddy just bought this so we don't know how long it has been doing this.

this is also the sign of a bad IAC valve, try cleaning it

I didnt read where you mentioned a weakening battery. I know for a fact that my battery started to get weak, and the starts to longer and longer. When I replaced the batter, all I had to do was flick the key and that beast started up.

If its dirty, guncked up and stuff, air could be restricted and telling the car its not getting the amount of air it needs. If it's worn out or old, it could also be malfunctioning. It's a valve.. so it moves, open and closed. If something is restricting the air.. then its putting fuel and not enough air, and taking longer to start?

I could be way off, but thats my take.

IAC = Idle Air Control when it's not functioning properly the car won't idle properly and sometimes not at all. You can crank it, it will seem to start but soon after die. Sometimes you can keep it running by giving it throttle but letting off usually results in the engine cutting off.

I saw a '98 with the same problem, I believe they replaced the orings and seals around the pump and various things like that and it fixed it.
