ok, never done this, figured it can't be too hard, right? so, seriously, I have all the stuff, just not the knowledge (great place to start, huh?) so, I can imagine I jack up the car... does it have to be level, or can I just jack up the back, and have it like that...? anyone know off hand what type of bolt/nut/size of tool I will need to take off the drain plug, and any tips what-so-ever? thnx guys...

If you want to come over to my place here, we could do it. It's actually pretty easy, but there are a couple things that will make it easier.

The drain and fill plug will both take a 3/8" drive ratchet -- just the square part, no socket. They are both on the right hand side of the tranny, right on top of each other. Take the fill plug out first so you know you can refill it. Then drain the tranny. I like to let the car down or jack up the other side with the drain plug out so I get as much has possible out. Then the easiest way to refill is with a hand pump, you can get one at auto-parts stores. It will take more than 2 quarts, so you will need 3 of your favorite ATF. Pump it into the fill hole until it starts to run out. Then I like to lower the car again so it's level and evens itself out, then put the plug back in.

That's all there is to it.

Let me know if you want to swing by, I'll be here.

Probably plan for a couple hours to get it done from start to finish if you've never done it before.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're talking about an automatic and dropping the pan, because if you tried put 6 quarts of fluid in a T5 or a Tremec it would probably be flowing out of the shifter hole and all over the sides of the tranny. That would be the only way to even get it in there -- through the shifter hole; the fill plug won't even let you put that much in.

Viperos doesn't have an automatic, so he will be putting less than 3 quarts in his tranny.

yeah, no offense.. but the 5spd only takes 5.5 PINTS (2x quart amount...) it's almost exactly 2.3 quarts according to my service manual, and my owner's Manual... (anyway...) I already bought some royal purple Dexron III ATF... 4 quarts, just to make sure (plus, my taurus needed some as well...) and, I already had the pump... regular hand pump, was on sale at the local parts store... ( it was only $.99!!! how can I not buy it! even if I don't need it!) so, anyway, no little tricks? fairly straight-forward, and simple huh? well, we'll find out this week... as it really needs to be done... doubt it ever has been done, I know the rear-end hasn't ever been done... it was almost pure black!

I just posted on this. I would keep the transmission level. JMO though.
