Transmission Fluid Leak - Question

I have a slight leak coming from the point where the drive shaft joins the tranny.

You can see that it is only a slight drip,but what I want to know is,is there something simple like a seal in there that needs to be changed,or is it something more ?

More than likely just a seal. What kind of transmission is it?

FMX problem

When I start my car,lately i have noticed that when i put the tranny in drive (or any gear),it acts like it is still in neutral,until after about 30 seconds or so,then it will. Once it gets going ,it's fine,just get the prob right after i start it up. Any ideas?
I thought maybe since i had a small leak at the tailhousing end,it may have leaked out enough tx fluid over time to affect it,but i checked the level and it is within tolerance according to the dipstick.

Mabye the following site will help you out. It has some exploded views of the internals. It may help you narrow down what the problem might be. It could be the oil seal after the sun gear or something after that.

Its a hydraulic transmission so it sounds like you may have a bigger problem around the corner than that little leak. I would take the leak and the not going into gear right away as some good warning signs you need to do some repairs. If your are not able to rebuild/repair it yourself you may want to have a good shop check it out. You may not get a third warning sign. Im no tranny expert but those are my thoughts.

Yeah I was planning on having the whole drivetrain checked out anyway soon so hopefully i'll find out before anything major happens !

probably the rear seal. watch for excessive wear on the yolk. the hesitation could be bad u-joints.

that might explain it. I don't understand though why it only does it when I have just started the car,but once I get it in gear and get driving,it seems fine,although it does slip a couple times for the first couple hundred yards.
I'll definitely make a point of that to the person I get to look at it.

As for the yoke,would it wiggle if it is worn,I mean,could it be wiggled by hand to tell if it is worn? (As opposed to being a tight fit if normal)

There shouldn't be any play between the output shaft of the trans and the yolk. You may warn u-joints as mentioned earlier. Be careful not to let these fool you into thinking your yolk is bad.

I think what 66forfun meant was, there may be a ring worn into the yoke where the seal rides. Which may be part of the cause for your leak.
