All transmissions which fit a 289/302/351w will fit that car just fine.

First off, do you want a manual or auto trans ?

Why would your 5.0 break it? the T5 was the factory 5-speed in all those 5.0 Fox-body Mustangs you see running around.

You could always use a Tremec 5-speed, they'll stand up to a big-block engine, or you could go old-school and use a Ford "toploader", which was almost indestructable.

A G-force T5 can handle anything a 5.0 could throw at it. you've got a lot of options, being that your car is a 67 you've got a bit more room than my 65 so you could easily put a tko500 or 600 in there. AOD or 4r70w. but if your 5.0 is NA a t5z will do just fine.

Hes afraid 5.0 motor will break the T5 as if that was not what they were designed to run behind. Hmm did someone tell you that one day or where did you come to this conclusion?

Back when I first did my V8 swap into my Ranger, using a Toploader 4 speed, I ran into a transmission guy at a local car show. He asked me why I didn't use a T-5. I replied that they're a POS. He replied back that that wasn't true, he rebuilt em all the time (there's your sign, as Bill Engvall would say).......................................... I told him I'd look him up if the Toploader ever needed rebuilding. That was about 7 years ago. That Toploader just recently lost the 3rd gear syncros...........................................after 41 years of use. It still works fine, just grinds a bit if you try to speed shift into 3rd.

If that was true, why was Ford forced to constantly upgrade the T-5 over it's run behind the 302? And why is it not used behind the 3V 4.6 today ? It's been relegated to lighter duty behind the OHC 4.0 V6 Mustangs now.

The T5 was a great trans for its time and can be made to withstand the punishment of most 302/5.0 combinations and even a large majority of 351w setups. The reason that Ford had to constantly up the spec on it is because Ford was constantly uping the HP and TQ on the 5.0 motor. As Borg-Warner's technology progressed, they were able to build the T5 into a stronger and stronger unit so Ford kept using them.

The T5 will never be the legendary trans the 4 speed is but it certainly has its place. If you want a cheap over drive 5 speed trans, its one of the best on the market for a large majority of small block Fords. Most of the design flaws in the T5 are easily correctable with aftermarket parts.

Another great thing about the T5 is the wieght. It is super light and the bell housing seperates from the trans, I can't stand the ones that don't.

Unless you are going to spend a bunch of money on it then it isn't going to be a race car or even a true heavy duty trans. It has its place in production even today, Tremec didn't stop making them after they bought Borg-Warner. All in all, its a great and easily available trans.

Because they kept upgrading the 5.0.

The multi-valve 4.6 has more power than the 5.0, and the T5 design went as far as it could go. Even back in 1989, when the T5 was king in the Mustang, the 5-speed Thunderbird SC with the 3.8 V6 had the M5R2 Mazda truck transmission, which was also used in some F-150 trucks, because the car was heavier and the 3.8 V6 more powerful than the 5.0.

The 5.0 didn't get uprated that far. It went from 175hp/245ftlbs in the 83, to 225/300ftlbs in 92. It was always marginally capable of handling the 5.0's torque in stock form. When Ford bumped the power ratings in the 93 Cobra, it was the end of the line for it. Yea, it was Fords choice for production, but hardly what you could claim a success.

Didnt ford use the T5 up till around 2000 in the cobras? Its still a pretty good trans.

Yes I agree I have a toploader that has had the 2nd gear syncro going out for 20 years. No worse today than when I got it. Shifts fine unless I slam it in. One day it might need to be worked on but I doubt it. They are pretty much bullet proof

You are thinking of the replacement for the T5, the T45. Ford switched the Cobra out in 99 or 2000 to the TR3650 and then in 2003 they bumped it up to the T56.

Edit:
Ford also used the T5 in the V6 Mustang up through 04 for sure.... not sure if they are still using them on the 05+ V6 or not.

The T-5 is still the V6 transmission for the 05-08 Mustangs.

Pretty sure they used the T5 in 2000 cobras as I have one from one of those in my 67. I remember I ran the number back when I got it.

I recently replaced my T5 with a T56 6 speed. I chose the T56 because of its two overdrive gears. The first is like a road race TKO500/600 and the second is like the standard OD on the T5 or standard TKO. It will not fit in the standard trans tunnel unless you change some other parts. It fit in my trans tunnel but I have Ron Morris lowering motor mounts and had to make a crossmember. Ron Morris also makes a crossmember that is a bolt in but I was worried it may not work with my current exhaust.

This is not as simple of a swap as a TKO but fits my needs better. The T56 is a great trans and it shifts as smooth as my T5 did. The other downside is the transmission is more money than a built T5. It is a great trans swap for a 67-70 Mustang! PM if you need more info.

I'm rather certain a T5 was never bolted to a 4.6L motor. I could be wrong.

I think you are thinking of a 93 Cobra which had the T5z in it ?

We also have a 97 Cobra and it has a T45. I think the T5 was no longer used in V8 Mustangs after 95 when they started using the 4.6 in 96 to replace the 5.0.
