Plugged filter restricts fluid pressure which drops line pressure which affects shifting, shift points, and gear engagement.

You should notice that it takes a long time to engage drive or reverse from neutral, and may hesitate before shifting gears. Generally sluggish. Similar symptoms to low fluid, because it is the same effect.
