Trying to purchase a GT500 for MSRP

I had a few e-mails back in forth with a local ford dealer.

Gullo Ford in Conroe and here was the first response.

I used their website and asked for a price quote on the GT500.

Daryle,

I find that asking for more that 20,000 dollars over msrp is completely unreasonable.

Let me know when your ready to sell for msrp. I want to give you a little feedback and current market situation on this car.

It's been out for 6 months now. People are getting them for 50K.

Also note that ford plans to make more of the GT500's, and the production numbers are going to be higher than the 2003/2004 mustang cobras. I'm sure you had a few of those left over in January of 2005 selling below MSRP. I remember because I was shopping the market at the time. And purchased a 2004 Cobra from Russel and Smith for 1,000 below msrp.

Good luck on the mark up, I'll be ready in 6 months when your begging to sell at msrp.

Thoughts? For every one of you who wants a GT500 for MSRP or just a little bit over, there are 3 dumbasses willing to pay 65K for the car which helps keep these prices inflated. Wait until all the people with more money than sense get their fill and then the prices will come down to earth.

I just wish there was some way that Ford Motor Corp would get involved and stop this from happening. All this is doing is hurting ford, but not the dealer, who represents them. Fuggit, I'll go pay 45K for a new vette then is starting to be my attitude about it.

If you can wait a few more months (years?) you'll be able to get the GT50000 at the price you want. It is important to note that this model is still realitivly new to the ford dealerships. And as such, it's probably moving off the show rooms at a decent pace to justify the higher prices... As the sales drop - the price will drop as well so just hang in there if you really want a 500 HP cruiser

There's an article in the latest Hemmings Muscle Machines where a guy paid $20,000 over sticker for a GT500 - and was complaining about it. The thing is, dealer markup requires both a greedy dealer and a willing buyer - in my book, if someone pays the extra $$$, they've got no right to complain. They've only encouraged the practice for the next guy.

The GT500 is a nice car, but for over $65,000?????

If you're ready to spend even MSRP why don't you get a Roush Stage 3? It's only slightly slower in a straight line but it smacks the pants off the GT500 at the track.

With the Rouch you're getting, better suspension, better brakes, better interior.

Or is it all about owning something with Shelby's name on it? If so, then now you know why so many people are still willing to pay $20,000 more over sticker.

Don't forget too, if you REALLY WANT something that's truly had Shelby's guys hands on it...then the upcoming Shelby GT is more Shelby than the GT500. The 500s were initially spec'd out at Shelby but all are built and assembled at Ford. The Shelby GTs are Mustangs shipped to Shelby then brought back.

I know it's only a "GT350" essentially but, put a blower on it if you want speed. At least you'd be driving a REAL Shelby from his factory floor.

Very true. The Roush mustangs and Saleen Mustangs will probably be just as collectible and/or rare in the future. Not to mention that the Roush and Saleen Mustangs have more of the original flavor or the Shelbys in the 60s and 70s and the contemporary Shelby GT-H and the Shelby GT.

I had a dealer try to sell me a used 2003 Mach 1 for more than I bought one for new. He said the original owner had paid $5,000 over sticker and thought the price was fair. I told him I waited til the ignorant people had bought theirs and got mine for less than sticker.

The price will drop on these but the million dollar question is when. We got ours for a good deal. A guy ordered it offering to pay 20k over and then backed out. The dealer was “stuck” with a car they couldn’t afford to keep. We walked in on a Saturday and in an hour put a down payment on it and it came in that coming Monday.

The only thing is though, how many cars do you know that were going for a solid 10-15k or more after being out 6 months? The 03/04 Cobras weren’t even this bad. All this means is that these cars will have a good resale value in the years to come. I don’t see these cars going below 35k used a few years from now.

They will most likely hit sticker around the middle of next year. I’m sure by early next year they will drop to 5k over and hover there awhile since a lot of people will be more intrigued at that price and then slowly it will hit MSRP.

Hey, when I got my 07 GT, they had a Ford GT sitting in the showroom, and were asking $120,000 OVER MSRP for it. They say it is the 8th car they got from ford, and that the last one sold for $100k over MSRP. Granted, that is a rare car, and they are in demand, and it's apples to oranges.....

But my point is, there are people out there who will pay it. As others said, the prices will drop eventually on the GT500's. Honestly, if I owned a dealership, I'd do the same thing. Those dealers don't make an outrageous amount of money on each deal.

For instance..... sticker on my car was $28,575. I walked out the door paying $24k... almost $1,250 under invoice. They may have lost a bit of money on my deal, but they'll make it up on someone else.... like the guy handing them $100k for the opportunity to own a GT.

SAme thing happened to me. That's why I have a new '07 instead the Mach. I really wanted the Mach; color I wanted, in great condition, and only 18,000 miles. But it was three years old and the warranty was virtually over and they were asking at the dealership the same price I could get a brand new '07 GT for. Guess which one I chose. My salesman was very nice, but I flat-out told him that the price for the Mach was completly unreasonable. And guess what, it's still there today.

Same thing happened to me....I was choosing between a clean and low mile azure blue mach with a few goodies bolted on it but the dealer tried to play games with me.

I picked up the '05 for less and got a car that is in better shape for it.

When the 05s came out I went shopping. I couldnt find a GT anywhere for less than 5K over msrp. That was about a 17-20% markup. Thats why I bought a V6 for 2k under msrp, and have been happy every since.

Like the GT the prices will come down, Im guessing 12-18 months after they became available.

With the shape Ford is in they will keep building them as long as they can sell them.

I currently have a 2006 GT Vert, 5speed black on black. It's a fun car, but I'm really liking the GT500.

I guess I'll have to wait or spend some money on the vert.

Gullo Ford in Conroe is a GREAT dealer. I'm at LSU right now, but my family lives in The Woodlands. My friend (who is on this site) is getting JBA LT's and H-pipe installed there today. They are extremely helpful so I wouldn't rule them out on dealers to go to in the future. They are easy to deal with, so if you wait they might be able to help you out

I think that if Motor Trend is right and they make a Bullitt and a Boss for 08 that will have a major affect on the price of the GT500 and we can all get one for sticker maybe. I would prefer a Boss with a 302 over the GT500 for handling reasons if no other, but if they make 1000 of them i can certainly forget it. Hopefully the rich guys will be after them at least on some level and the GT500 can be had for less.

Anyone that can spend 45K on a car can probably afford the extra 20K. However, those will a little sense realize the GT500 is just not 20K better than a Vette. In fact, it probably should be 5K cheaper than a Vette to be competetive in terms of capability. Best bet, achieve a little less envy and get the Vette.

I could afford to puchase 45k, but not 65K. 45K is actually the most I want to spend.

Oh well. I'll just spend some money on the vert, buy a blower or something, that should hold me off for a year.

I live in the Woodlands, and my buddy works the parts counter at Gullo ford. Funny as I think he's getting the samething done to his 2004 Mustang. Long tubes and h-pipe.
