valve cover gaskets

ok..so i replaced the valve cover gasket..but i didnt do it right since it smokes more now and alot more oil is burned..how do i do it?

do i use rtv, a gasket or both?, its really hard workin in the cramped space by the firewall..anyways to help this out?..how should i crank the bolts down to? i dont have a torque wrench..so right now there to the point where i couldnt move them much more


help would be great

What kind of gaskets did you replace them with?

I only use the metal/rubber gaskets avaible at the dealer - I think FelPro makes one too. With the metal/rubber composite, you simply clean both surfaces, and light grease the gasket so it slides and doesn't bind when being tightened; then you evenly snug the valve cover bolts down. If you're using cork or rubber gaskets - leaks can be caused by overtightening them. Get it too tight and it can buckle up between the bolts, or force the cork out of the seal area.

its the fel-pro for the 302 5liter

me and my friend put the rtv sealant on both sides of the gasket..could this of caused it?

Yes. Get these gaskets and you will never have another leak. And they are reuseable too.

i was kinda hoping not to spend any more money on it..as im selling it..i have another fel-pro..i got a set..but only one leaked

i used cork and a very thin bead of ultra blue along the bottoms. Leak free.

The gasket is supposed to do the sealing so you should not need sealant. The most important thing is not how tight you get the bolts but how even.

i unno what its made of..im guessing cork..i think im gonna go out and try it again, but tightening even more even..its got the metal rings in the screw holes

its fel-pro, feels and looks like cork, got the metal in the screws..and i went to advanced auto..they gave it to me
