Well a problem surfaced with my 96 Cobra, explains the 6-K price tag. When the car is cold, on its first start I hear what I think is valve knock for the first 4-5 seconds of running. It almost completly goes away but if you have your head under the hood and rev it you can faintly hear it when the rpms drop back down. It seems to be comming from the rear passenger side head, almost sounds louder at the intake plenum. Do I need a valve job? I would like to work on the car myself, do I have to remove the heads for that kind of work? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

probly just valve lash adjusters. I think they can be noisy. if you had valve tapping I would think it would only get worse with higher rpms.

I know with sohc you can remove valve springs and such with head on, but its a pita.

I would at least take it somewhere and see if they hear what you hear. but I doubt its anything to worry about.

oh and as I've said before I don't know what the hell I'm talking about so take it for what its worth

I had PTV when I was sitting at idle; pinging noise but as I would drive it would go away...I drove home fine on the freeway, as I was going down my street...timing chain broke, spring broke, valve dropped, bye bye engine. You may want to take the head off and check the piston for little marks on the top where the valve may be hitting.

Don't scare the guy! If the engine (internally) is stock, there would no reason to suspect PTV contact.

Screamin' is right, it's probably just lash adjusters. Mine does the same thing and has for 40 some-odd thousand miles. No worries.

Well just another idea.. Does it have all stock exhaust? or anything, because i thought the same thing, thinking the motor was bad or something, but all it is, is an exhuast leak.. it will tick while its cold, and then go away once in gets hot.. so it could be something like that..

It does get really old after a while.. but i hope you can find it and hoped we helped...
