The vent air in my car isn't too warm even when I turn the temperature knob all the way to the red zone. Any ideas what may cause this?

what temps is the motor at and what stat temp do you run.

V8's usually put out good heat (i have a 4 banger that wont put out heat below 50* because it runs so cold - factory temp gauge creeps toward the cold side till it almost pegs). LOL.

The gauge on the dash reads a bit towards the colder range not quite to the full warm range. I bought the car used so I'm unsure of the thermostat specs. The thermostat looks stock and it might even be the original one from the factory ('90 notch) Do the stock 5.0's run the 180 degree stats?

I'm also going to do a radiator flush and fill in the near future so I might as well replace it with a new thermostat huh?

as you know, the stock gauge is kinda too inaccurate to interpolate (i think). still i think you should have some heat.
stock stat is 192/195*. some guys run one of those in the winter (and some with killer cooling systems run it all year - the system is so good they dont much hotter than their fan setting). i run a 180 (Mr Gasket - very nice stat and worth every penny vs a parts store stat, IMHO. ~10 bucks at a speed shop.

if the level is topped up, a flush might help it out. hopefully the heater core is not clogged. if you let it sit and idle (or during the day) do you get good heat?
good luck (see, another recursive rambling post from me).

I do have heat but it's just not that hot.

I wonder if I should run one of those cooling system flush treatments like prestone.

So if I go and replace the stat will a gasket be necessary or is RTV sufficient?

The stock t stat should be a 192 or so. I use a 180 in my toy, and went back to the 192 in the Capri, to make it drive and heat better.

If the heater, fan and vents work, I would vote for the thermostat.

It is relatively easy to change, although if it has not been done in a while, you have to use care getting the bolts out. Sometimes it is easier to pull the dist to get at the bolts.

I put allen head bolts with antiseize back in, and use a long ball end allen wrench from then on.

If you can get hold of a scanner that will display the coolant temp, it should easily tell you what the temp is.

Are you sure the temp control dial is actually turning the temp control peg? I've gone through 2 dials so far that broke without any indication, and although it felt like I had turned it to the hottest, it actually wasn't moving the peg at all. Just a thought.

Well this was when I lived in WI, but yes people use the heater in Tucson.

50 degrees may not seem cold, but in comparison, if the temperature where you live dropped 60 degrees suddenly (as it does here between September and November) you'd be freezing too!

Yeah, i have the same prob..have warm air, but never hot. My car has aftermarket temp guages and it varys between 170-180. Never gets over 185 though, although i never really did any stop and go traffic, but crusing on the highway, 180 is the norm.

Looks like I'm going to change out the T-stat shortly. According to Hissin, I'll go oem for the thermostat/gasket. I checked out the T-stat housing and it looks like there's 2 bolts that hold it together, am I correct or is there a third bolt behind the water pump hoses?

Rd mentioned that I should be cautious when removing the bolts. What should I be watching for besides the obvious (like rounding off the head of the bolt?)

BTW, can I use the same RTV that I used on my differential housing? It's the permatex copper stuff, high temp, sensor safe.

Thanks for the help!!

uh oh, someone is doing something based on what i said.

yep, two bolts. the driver side one is kind of a PITA to get out. replacing the bolts with allen head bolts is a good idea for future R/R.

those ratcheting box end wrenches help with getting the bolts out.

some gaskets have adhesive on one side. i have not used them but Michael and others like them. most people use RTV Blue (IIRC). i use water pump and thermostat housing gasket maker (couple bucks at parts store).

note the orientation of the stat as it comes out - be sure to get it back in the correct way (assuming it was installed correctly before).

might replace the bypass hose, etc while in there since it has to come off.

good luck.

BTW, Rockin, i forgot to look where you are located. if it is somewhere with a mild climate, a 180 might not be a bad idea. i get good heat when it is colder out (V8's are nice for cranking out heat vs 4 bangers). or you could do the shade tree winter thermostat - oh never mind we dont want you doin that. LOL.

good luck.
