Vent switch issue

I'm having an issue with the vent direction switch, it seems to be stuck on defrost and will not move to floor, vent, mix, etc. The switch itself moves, but the airflow direction does not change. I believe the blend motor is vacuum operated but I'm not sure where to look for a bad line. I feel like this has happened before when my dad owned the car, but he can't remember how it was resolved. Thanks for any advice.

There's a small hard vacuum line on the passenger side under the hood that supplies vacuum to the actuator.. Look for one that goes into the firewall.

Start under the hood, because the heat under there causes the vacuum hose to become brittle. Most likely that is where the vacuum leak is. The Vacuum line is a small hard black plastic one that runs from a vacuum tree on the inside fender of the driver's side, along the firewall and through a small hole near where the AC lines go through the firewall.

The line had cracked and became disconnected from the grommet. Nothing a little electrical tape couldn't fix. Thanks guys.

Electrical and duct tape should not be seen as a "good" fix. A vacuum leak also affects engine performance. You would be better off cutting out the cracked section and joining the two ends with some vacuum hose.

agreed. electrical tape is at best only temporary and will not last.

that line is so small that if you butt the broken ends together and wrap with electrical tape it'll be fine. It should be fixed correctly, but I don't foresee it being a problem for a long time. And you'll know if it fails when your vents act up again! lol

Well the line had cracked right where it feeds into the grommet on the vacuum tree. I cut the remaining 2-3mm of line out of the grommet and inserted the rest of the line which fit pretty snug. Wrapped it in electrical tape just to be sure then reconnected it to the tree. Seems to work fine so far
