Mine cranks right up hot or cold; you can drive away immediately without it stalling or bucking - one of the benefits of efi that's working properly. How long it takes to warm up depends on the type of driving. But I'd say two to three minutes and it starts to show coolant temp movement. I try to limit revs to about 1/3-1/2 of redline when the oil's cold (oil pressure on mine hits 60-65 IMMEDIATELY upon start up cold) so I don't take it over about 2000-2500 rpm until the oil temp hits at least 160F. That can take 10-15 minutes of around town driving. It can take as much as 20-25 minutes if it's less than 40F outside, and I crank it cold and head straight for the Interstate - which is only about 3 minutes from my house.
As many have alluded to, the car warms up MUCH more quickly being driven than it does idling. There's no load at idle, and relatively speaking, the engine just doesn't give off much heat.
Could your hot start problem be getting better because - uh - it's getting colder, as in winter time?
Most folks don't have an oil temp gauge, and therefore have no appreciation of how long it takes to warm the oil. Coolant heats up much quicker than the oil does, but the coolant doesn't lubricate the engine.
IMO I am for the drive it easy while cold, not letting it idle for 10-20 minutes at a time. If you need heat, there are electric heaters that can warm the cabin immediately then you switch to regular heat when the engine warms.
I see in the north that people even leave their cars idling in the parking lot while they have dinner. I think that it is hard on the engine sitting for long times a low idle.
I was wearing jeans and a tee shirt today with no jacket. It is cooler, but not cold. Be cold in Jan till late feb, early march.
"Uh" not when your turning off the car and then starting it directly back up...back when the problem first occured it wouldn't even want to start right after I shut the car off...but slowly but surely it has gotten better over the months (hasn't really got cold except for the last few weeks)...the car starts up closer to normal after it being warm...
The underhood/engine temperature doesn't change that greatly within 5 seconds no matter if it is 90* or 30* outside...

not sure if you're referring to me, but no, I dont have a starting problem, all i wanted to know was how much time u guys take to warm u guys' engine up in the morning
