Well the least coolest thing just happened to my car

So here's the deal. The guy I bought my car from apparantly lose the original key for my '96 GT. Yes I said '96 meaning he had to have a new one made with the microchip. Anyway to make a long story short, the key he had made was cheap and looked like it came from a cereal box and now half of it is stuck inside my trunk lock cylinder. No pressure or excessive force, it just snapped like a twig when I turned it. Now, can I just buy a used key, ignition, and ignition module that all match and install it in my car or am I in for a headache? The worse part, the car is parked in front of my garage and my wife can't leave until it's moved. WTF.

If anybody has a set of matching computer chip key components please let me know.

If I'm not mistaken there is a bar code located by the door striker (cant remember what it says) but it should have the 'combo' for a new key. My wifes old V6s both had to have new keys cut after we sold them. That's what I was told for one of them. I know if I'm wrong everyone else will correct me lol

This is how I did it for for 96 mustang. First i bought an uncut key on ebay for about $10. Then I went to sears to get it cut. They may or may not cut it for you since you didnt buy it from them. But i just talked to the guy and he cut it for me.

Now all you have to do is program the new key and this is how i did it. It only took like a minute.

Its the same key for the 96 mustang. Just make sure you buy one with the ford logo on it.

Dealer cut me a key from the vin, cost me 12 dollars, but it worked perfectly.
I spent another 35.00 to have it flashed to the car.

Ford only supplies cut codes for dealer for 2002 and newer MY vehicles currently. Every day they purge the key code lists for vehicles 10 years +1 day old.

If the original selling dealer is known we can call and ask if they can look in their database to see if they entered the key code when the vehicle was sold.

If the original selling dealer is not available, or unwilling to help, we have a local locksmith that will come out and cut a key.

just take your registration card to your local ford dealer and theyll cut you a new on the spot if they have your key with the right chip in it. ive done a total 3 cars like this. including the one in my sig

I just bypassed it and now I'm using a regular non PATS ignition cylinder/key. Thanks for the help guys.

How: Removed the transponder from the key and attached it to the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder.
Why: Because I can buy 117 regular keys for the price of 1 transponder key.

He has a 1996 MY car. Ford only keeps key codes for cutting in their database for 2002 and newer model year vehicles. So thats a no go.

A PATS does not cost that much. If you want to avoid the dealers, all you have to do is buy one and take it to a hardware store and they will cut it for you.

Dont't mean to thread jack but, when in 1996 did they start doing the PATS. I have two 96's and they are both non PATS.

Huh, my 96' had PATS too. My situation was a lot like the OP's about a year ago the key broke off in the ignition. As long as I inserted the other half of the key the car would start. I just to it to a lock smith that my company uses and they fished out the other half of the key and made a new one but they had to order in a transponder key so I had to take the transponder out of the broke key and tape it to the key they cut for me until the new transponder key came in.

It was pain but it only cost 60 bucks total.
