Wet sanding is the only thing that will make a difference to the paint. But if you don't know what you're doing, you could make it look worse.

I agree about not wetsanding unless you know what you're doing. The claybar won't do anything for the ripples or the scratches, it just removes surface contaminents like road grime.

I too agree that wetsanding is for those who know what they're doing. I think a claybar followed with a good scratch and swirl remover would help. The clay bar will remove dirt and contaminants from the paint surface and the scratch and swirl remover will help to rubb out and blend in the swirls and scratches.

Id say your gonna hafta wetsand it if wanna see any dramatic results. Its not all that hard. Just got be sure and keep the paint plenty wet. Mix up some water and a little liquid soap. The guy did a little tutorial on wet sanding on TRUCKS a few episodes back. Might wanna try to catch that on rerun to get an a few hints on doing it.

If you have rust spots in your paint I would consider saving up for a new paint job and not mess with trying to get the orange peel (ripples) out of the old paint. Wet sanding and buffing will only work on a clearcoat paint system or a pure lacquer system. Other types of paints can't be wet (color) sanded and buffed. From what I'm understanding from your original post you aren't quite sure what type of paint you have. Plus it sounds to me like you are having more serious problems with the rust issue. Save the money and have it painted. It's well worth it.

Im not keeping the car though i was jsut trying to even the surfaces and try and protect the rusty spots before it gets even worse. This is the first time i have been able to keep it in the garage since i got it when i was 16. And I drove it all winter for two years!
