Well, the GTS is basically a 5.0 with an SN95 exterior/interior. Came w/o sports seats, rear spoiler, and fog lights. Versus the 96GT, they've got the same factory hp rating. Step it up to the 99+GT and those are better. GTS would give you more bang for the buck though engine-wise since it was cheaper. I dunno what's better, I like my 97 just fine. And I'm sure I'd like my GTS if I had one

it was called the 248A in 96. either way, there is basically no difference in performance, the GTS might weigh 100 lbs less than a regular GT depending on how the GT is equipped. drivetrain wise there is no difference in the GTS/248A and GT.

Correct it is called the 248A package in 96-98. 96-98 normally come equipped with 2.73's gears 248A's have 3.27's stock like the 99+ GT's. No power windows, no power door locks, v6 interior, no rear spoiler. There are a few other minor things. I have yet to weight my car to see how much less it is than a regular GT but hopefully one of these days when I'm at the track I will get around to it and I will let you all know how much lighter the GTS/248A's really are compared to regular GT's. Also they have no TC or ABS. Mine also has no cruise control but I know another guy with a 248A also who has cruise control so I'm not sure about that. To answer your question which is better, for racing the GTS/248A for overall feel a regular GT would be better.
