i broke 2 studs on my car, replaced all 4 last nite. it was my first time doing it, and it took way too long. the way i did it was to use a lugnut and air impact to pull the stud in, but it didnt pull them in all the way, there's still like a fraction of an inch, like 1/16th at the most before it butts up flush, id like to know what the technically correct way of installing these studs is, (for future reference), thanks for any input.

The correct way would be on a press, but most people do it the way you did. If you use a bushing or small bearing between the lug nut and the surface it works a little easier. Most impact wrenches wont hit the required torque to pull the stud all the way thru, u will need to use a breaker bar. Use lube on everything to keep the knurls, threads, and spacers from galling.

I'd use an oversize nut to rest against the axle flange, a washer on top of that and then a nut (other than a lug nut) to draw it through.

i actually have a stud installer from mac that cost $50 and works great.it uses your same method except it uses an impact style lugnut and washer so it won't pull the theads off of the new stud.
