What Is This Metal Rod?

95 V6. There's a metal rod that appears to run along the front axle. I looked under there last night, and saw it hanging on one side, inserted into a rubber fitting. I assume there's another fitting on the other side, but it was dark so I just pulled it. It seems too thin to be any kind of real support.

It's probably the one on the power steering rack that equalizes the pressure on the bellows. There should be a place on the other side to insert it.

This makes sense. I was hearing some grinding noise, especially when I turned left. That's why I was under there in the first place. After a couple of hours driving, I speculated that the noise was the steering rack. Here's to hoping that replacing it on both sides will take care of that. Thank you.

It's just a pressure equalization tube so the bellows don't blow out. If you are hearing grinding, a rack replacement may be in your future
