93stangTN - where are you located? Ambient temps should drive your weight selection. For summer in the south (TN I'm guessing maybe...me too) - with lows in the 70's and high's in the 90's or more, you could run 10W-40 or 20W-50. For winter time cold starts, you'll want no heavier than a 10W30 or even 5W-30. I run Shell Rotella synthetic in my wife's Bimmer year round - 5W-40. 5 weight for easy cold starts in winter; 40 weight for a little extra protection when it's hot during the summer.

With that many miles on it unless it's been running synthetic I'd stick with regular old dino oil and just change it regularly. Purolator or Motorcraft for a decent inexpensive filter - do not use Fram.

You should jump into our little thread down in the SouthEast forum - "anyone from E.Tn in the forum..."

I'd run 10W40 in the summer/spring/fall, and drop down to 5W30 in the winter if the car has to undergo cold (20F or lower) starts.

I've been running Mobil-1 5w30 in everything I own/service for years now. I just took a big step and bought a case of 10w30 I'm going to try.

I'm going to try Amsoil in my car, but probably still run the M-1 in my F150.

synthetic oil is all hype and a huge waste of money. Show me an engine that has 200,000 miles on it run on synthetic and ill show you one that has run 200,000 miles on regular 10/30, 10/40, whatever... It doesnt matter - as long as you change the oil at regular intervals, thats what counts.

I ran Valvoline VR1 20W50 in my 83... and I run Castrol 20W50 in my 90. Summers here are brutal on oil.

Motor oil. vegetable oil did not work too well. neither did gear oil.

M1 15W-50 in 110* summer days and 10-40 in our 'winter' (highs in the 70-80's).

Michael's thoughts on weights are very similar to mine (when running dino juice in the summer, i use 20W-50).

good luck with it.

I used to agree with this comment until I pulled 365k out of my 94 Miata. Only had syn in it from the start. Only thing that killed it was a faulty water pump and temp gauge. Overheated when the pump failed. Mechanic said I would've been able to keep going on those internals with a few new parts. I would assume he meant rings, seals, etc.

I think it boils down to how you drive, and the care you take of you car.

God I miss that car. Sometimes I think she was a factory freak.

I use Mobile 1 Syn. I swear by the stuff. I drive pretty hard, and I have yet to see the stuff come out black.
