What makes the stock automatic shifter sloppy?

I'm about to fix up a car for a kid and need to fix the sloppy stock shifter. What makes these jiggle back and forth? I need to know what parts to order for it. Mine was sloppy when I had my auto, but I just replaced it with a Hammer shifter so I don't know.

the plastic bushings in the lower end wear out, they are the same ones as what's in the brake and clutch pedals i think

I don't think they are the same. The part number in NPD is 7A133-1 for the shift selector shaft bushing. The clutch/brake support bushing is 2471-1. New bushings (2) will cure the loose shifter feel.

Yep, but when I went to buy mine a few years ago they didn't make the brass ones for it. The replacements ate now plastic I guess.

the replacements i got were brass, but its been a few years... try mustangs unlimited

Maybe someone can rig up a set of rollers or needle bearings!

They are plastic now. I just got some from MU a few weeks back.

You can get those Floor Shift Bushing at Mac's Antique Auto Parts .95 cents each. Part Number C5ZZ-7A133-A.
