What to expect?

Just got my new exhaust set up today. It will be a few weeks before I have time to install but what can I expect?

Going from stock headers, stock h-pipe with all 17 cats on it, and I think 50 series Flows that are 12 years old. All stock size pipes.

Going to BBK ceramic polished headers 1 5/8 shorties, BBK O/R H-pipe, Flowmaster American Thunder 40 Series exhaust, all 2.5" pipe.

A much better sounding and louder foxbody. Proablly some horsies as well.

The exhaust was the first thing that I replaced on mine. Basically the same exhaust set up as you have and it caused me to loose in the bottom end although the car gained in the upper RPM's. Haven't a clue about the hp added but it was not significant definetly not 30-40hp.

the stock components alone are not much of a restriction on a stock motor, in and of themselves. BUT, if your old cats, etc were clogged, you might see some nice HP improvements (but it will be restoring power that was there originally, but had since been restricted).

So IMHO no one can tell you what to expect since we dont know the exact condition of what you had. I would not expect a big increase unless your old stuff was in bad shape. as Jason said, it should sound a lot better though and move pretty nice.

Holy Crap!! 30-40 HP... Worst thing to do is to ADD up the manufacturers "advertised" horsepower gains. I'm sure that's what you did. I'd say if the cats are clogged... probably about 20 hp... if everything is in good shape... maybe 5-10 rwhp.. But I'm only speculating.

I have almost the same setup, except I went with LTs and x pipe. I would say I gained some power, enough to feel.

Why didn't you go with Lts?

First of all let me say I have the mechanical prowess of a monkey. :damnit: But after researching some of the previous posts and asking questions here, the conclusion I came to was that unless I was going to be going over 400 horses, there wasn't much ,if any benefit, from going with the LT's other than sound. So for the money, and from what I read the ease of installation, I decided the shorties was best for me.

I would think you'd get most of the power from the off road pipe, maybe a little from the cat back and the headers, I would say maybe 10-15rwhp or so, but should be good foundation for future mods. I switched from shorties to longtubes because of a plug wire burning problem. I would think on a stock motor there wouldn't be much of a difference comparing the shorties to the longtubes. But when I switched from shorties to lt's, when I had my h/c/i, I felt a good difference.

You'll notice some gains in the upper rpms. You might notice a loss in power in the lower rpms. On a stock engine don't expect huge gains from aftermarket exhaust. Maybe 10-15 flywheel hp.
