what would cause a whine on decel

I ripped the rear back out.I just dont get it.I used ford gears (373s) that had a few thousand miles on them.my pattern was acceptable centered between face and flank,it was towards the heel on the drive side and towards the toe on the coast side but was deemed acceptable.my backlash was .008 and I then installed a.007 shim on both sides to load the carrier bearings I wanted to use .006 for the preload but I ran out of em.anyone have any idea what causes a whine on decel?the whine was most prevalent at 40 MPH and lower, at 60 of 70 MPH I could not hear it.

what did you put the .007 shims on both sides for? After you got the backlash you added more, same on each side, to preload. What was the purpose? Did you start out with less than enough thickness to equal factory shim thickness or what? I am setting up gears myself for the first time and I am a little confused. I have read a lot but still in the dark. Could you read my most recent post about installing gears and see if you can help. And not trying to steal your post, just looking for help myself, sorry.

. in all the write ups that I have seen they instruct you that once you get an acceptable backlash(0.08-0.15you should install a .006 shim on both sides to load the carrier bearings, it keeps light pressure on the bearings so the carrier doesnt move when in operation.since you are adding to both sides equally it wont change your backlash.the best way to get them in is once you get the desired lash, you remove the shims and reinstall them with the extra .006 on each side, it is said to be easiest if you put the smaller shims in first and then drive the larger ones in last with a soft hammer ,I used a piece of wood.

its probably just the fact that they are used gears. they had a different wear pattern than what you set up. if it doesnt whine really badly than i would just leave it and deal with it

My guess would be that if this is the case, that the whine will probably go away as the gears wear into the new pattern.

yeah, youre right. they should "break-in" and stop whining but sometimes they dont. if the backlash and wear pattern are correct and they whine than there really isnt anything you can do about it besides wait and see if it goes away

well I have already pulled it back apart.I have a set of richmond 373s laying around,maybe ill throw them in and see what happens.
