whats better long tube or shorty headers?

just wondering whats worth buying talk to someone today he said shortys, then another person said long tube

They both gain hp and torque.....

long tube headers - gain more torgue
short tube headers - gain more hp

But they are normally small gains (10 - 12) unless you have a nicely modded engine... the cost for our engines are high, and install is high too...

Longtubes, hands down

You will have a much more powerful powerband with the Longtubes. Reported peak gains have been somewhere around 15-20rwhp, and the area underneath the curve can show gains as much as 20-30rwp/rwtq.

Shorties will provide peak numbers a bit short of longtubes but the area under the curve is not as "fat". It's not all about peak numbers. I'll take 30 under the curve and a 5hp peak over a 30hp peak and 5 under the curve.

I havent heard of that theory yet. From what Ive seen longtubes make more power at any RPM than shortys. They make much more power at the low end.

That's not the case...

Long tubes and shorties both make similar peak gains in both horse power and torque, but the long tubes make much more horse power and torque at low and mid RPMs than do the shorties...

There was a really good article that compared shorty headers to long tubes on a 347ci windsor push rod engine in the May 2004 5.0 Mustang and Super Fords magazine...and while that's a comparison on a pushrod engine, simliar things happen with headers on a modular engine...

I believe they are a good compromise between ease of installation like the shorties have(well, easier at least compared to LT's) and the power down low that the long tubes have over the shorties...I really haven't seen any tests on them though to see what their actual gains are...

I believe August 2003 issue of 5.0 Mustang had an article on the Bassani mid-length headers. Put it on a N/A engine that originally had shorties and 3000-4000 rpm was 10-16 more horsepower with all other rpm's 2-6 hp higher. Not shabby.
