Are computer chips the same as a programmer? I was watching Horsepower TV and watching project nightmare and saw him with a superchips chip/programmer thinggy. It gave him 10rwhp across the band and at the peak he gained 5rwhp. Which brand is the best? I am looking in the $200-300 price range and of course I want the most horse and torque for my money. I have a 96GT with K&N, removed silencer, removed MAF screen, Off-road H, and King Cobra clutch. Suggestions please.

I think many people will agree that the best option we currently have is the SCT chips and/or programming software. Most of the hand-held programmers aren't worth the money unless you have an automatic because they don't offer many things to change. The auto guys however benefit from quicker shifts offered by the programmers.

Autos see more gain? Thats weird. So go with the Superchip? Shouldnt I see similar gains as the project nightmare? anymore suggestions? I kinda need it soon because I have new rims and the calibration is messed up so Ive been clocking ghost miles on my odometer.

I had a Superchip in my old 98 GT. My main reason was to disable the o2 sensors, but it also changed the AF ratio and bumped timing. The chip also required Premium gas only to avoid detonation. For $200 - $300 it may be worth it, maybe not. Some people do not have luck with them, but you can always complain until they reflash it.

Edit I am not sure if you can adjust the mileage by a chip on the pre 99 cars. My 98 GT had a plastic speedo gear that I had to change to correct mine when I swapped gears. I am thinking that was how it was done until 1999.
