I need to get a new distributor. Can anyone recommend a brand and part number? How are the ones from Autozone?

The ones from AutoZone are remanufactored. Often, they don't replace the PIP (Pick-up) coil in them, just keep the same one in.

What's wrong with your stock dizzy?

I had a guy replacing the PIP and he broke the distributor.

Not sure how it broke...he called me and said while trying to replace the PIP the shaft broke. He said he would pay me for the new distributor.

Do I get the steel or cast iron gear?

You need an arbor press to take the gear off the right way, unless he was using a hydraulic press and didn't have it lined up right. Either way, steel gear for stock cam.

Why does it matter how it broke just give him some advice on a distributor, I'm going with the MSD Pro-Billet

Calm down, I was curious how/where he managed to break a distributer while swapping a pip. And a *lot* of folks have had problems with the msd tfi modules, and have needed to swap them out for their stock ones or oem replacements. There are a couple threads on this over at the corral.
Personally, considering a real factory replacement is going to run you about $320, I'd get an accell billetech or msd billet. They both supposedly have a stronger shaft than the stock dizzy, look better, and are cheaper. Just be aware that you may have trouble with the tfi module if you go with the msd.

stock is fine. i was reading on the corral about the hit and miss quality of the MSD dizzy. i myself would just get a stocker off of ebay. i am currently using a mallory and it has worked great so far.

any links to the bad msd tfi's i just put in a msd pro billet ... and sometimes the car wont start when hot ...i was thinking it might be the tfi even though the distributer is brand new

I have the same warm start issue and I thought the same thing about mine but I bought a TFI from auto zone and still same thing. Sorry about the hijack

BUHAHAHAHAHA 320 for an OEM 5.0 Distributor!! HAHA... A distributor from the dealer is $1,294.00 Yeah, that's right... That's not a typo. Look it up at www.fordparts.com.
